DENVER - The University of Denver women's lacrosse team fell 9-7 to James Madison Saturday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium despite a career-high five goals from senior captain Christa Reese (Lutherville, Md.).

The Pioneers are 2-3 on the season and hold a 1-1 mark in the MPSF.

Reese got off to a hot start, putting the Pioneers on the board first with a goal assisted by Caitlin Derry (Seal Beach, Calif.) 5:06 into the game. James Madison scored their first of the game, off a free position attempt, before Reese tacked on two more for a hat trick in the first 18:06 of the game and a 3-1 Denver lead. The Lutherville, Md., native scored her second goal on a free position attempt and followed it with another goal assisted by Derry.

Senior captain Sarah Kasun (Bel Air, Md.) scored a free position goal and the Dukes added two more goals for a halftime score of 4-3 in favor of DU.

James Madison rattled off three unanswered goals, including a pair of man-up goals, in the first 14:39 of the second half to gain a 6-4 lead. Five different scorers provided the first six goals for the Dukes.

Reese tallied her fourth and fifth goals of the game to tie the score 6-6 with 9:29 remaining. Reese notched an unassisted goal with 12:39 to play in the game, and then Derry and Reese connected for the third time for the tying-goal. JMU responded to the tie with an unassisted goal by Jaci Gordon 31 seconds later.

The Pioneers tied the score once again with Casey White (Queensbury, N.Y.) finding the back of the net with 1:21 to go in the game. But the game did not need extra time as the Dukes scored two goals in the 21 seconds following Denver's seventh goal for the final score of 9-7.

Maddy Stevenson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) made eight saves in the game, including five in the second half, and freshman Nicki Wilkinson (Groton, Mass.) caused a team-high three turnovers in her second start for Denver.

The Pioneers will continue their homestand with a midweek match-up against Vanderbilt Wednesday, March 9 at 2 p.m. MT.
