DENVER - The 51st-ranked University of Denver men's tennis team beat IUPUI 7-0 today at Lifetime Fitness to remain undefeated in Summit League play. DU improved their overall record to 15-7 this season, while holding a perfect 6-0 record in home matches this year.
The Pioneers went 3-0 in doubles action today along with a perfect 6-0 in their singles matches. Today was marked as Senior Day as the team honored seniors Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) and David Fox (Surrey, United Kingdom) prior to the last home match of their collegiate careers.
"Obviously IUPUI has had a good run in the conference and we were both undefeated in Summit League play so far this season," head coach Ricardo Rubio said after the match. "For us to come out and play the way we did was really good. I thought we prepared really well this week in practice, the guys did a great job and I'm very happy for them. Especially for David and Henry, this was their last time playing at home, so for them to come out and perform the way they did, I'm very happy for them."
DU received singles victories from Craig, Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal), Yannik James (St. Georges, Grenada), Fox, Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom), and Wyatt Lovera (Miami, Fla.).
"It feels good to win," senior captain Henry Craig said. "I think I won the toughest match, so it was good to get through. I lost the second set but in the third set I was able to pull through, so it was good to squeak that one out and end on a good note during the last home match of my collegiate career."
In doubles play, Gasson and Craig paired up to defeat Bradley Luetschwager and Kyle Whittaker (IUPUI) 6-2, while Fox and James beat David Beasley and Akshay Verma (IUPUI) 6-2. The pair of Rocha and Lovera also emerged victories, defeating the duo of Matt Moe and Patrick McAuley (IUPUI) 6-2.
"We swept them 7-0 so it was a good way to finish off the year at home," fellow senior David Fox added. "We still have a lot of tennis to be played. We have our conference tournament and then hopefully NCAA's, but it was good that the whole team came together. We didn't lose a game which is what we need going forward through the rest of the season because we want to have one of our best years in the end. It was good for Henry to come through during his last home match as well. I thought everyone played well so it was a good day for the Pioneers."
Fox, a Chipstead (Surrey), United Kingdom native, had a few extra fans in the stands today as his parents traveled overseas to see their son play his last home match here in Denver.
"It was interesting because they actually haven't seen me play for four or five years, so to have them here was pretty special," Fox said. "They actually didn't know that it was Senior Day when they were coming out so it was kind of a coincidence, but it was great to have them here cheering me on and the extra support is definitely something that helped me today."
Denver will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. next weekend to take on the University of New Mexico at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. MT.
