DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team has named former Pioneer goalkeeper Dan Jacksonits graduate assistant coach for the 2016 campaign, head coach Jamie Franksannounced on Thursday.
"We're really excited to keep Dan Jackson with the program and add him to our coaching staff," Franks said. "His maturity, emotional intelligence and knowledge of game will make him a great coach in the future. Dan's knowledge of this team in particular, the goalkeeper position and our defensive principles will make him very effective with our squad this year."
Jackson is currently in his second year of his grad school program, pursuing an MS in marketing.
The UNC Asheville transfer played his final season of collegiate soccer with the Pioneers in 2015, leading Denver to its 15-1-3 record. Jackson allowed just eight goals for the only unbeaten team in the country in the 2015 regular season, keeping a 0.40 goals against average (third in the country) and a 0.833 save percentage (10th). Jackson and the Pioneers' defense kept 12 clean sheets in 19 matches a year ago.
In February, the United Soccer League's Colorado Switchbacks FC signed the DU goalkeeper for the 2016 league season.
In the two preseason polls released in the last couple of weeks, Denver came in at No. 20 in the NSCAA Preseason Poll and No. 15 in the College Soccer News Preseason Poll.
College Soccer News' 2016 Outlook:
The Pioneers under the direction of second year head coach Jamie Franks will have an experienced and deep roster with nineteen of the twenty-four players including nine starters back from the 2015 team that won a total of fifteen contests. The top four goal scorers return led by sophomore Andre Shinyashiki (5g, 2a) who will seek to build on a banner freshman season. The return of redshirt junior Eric Kronenberg who missed the 2015 season due to injury is an additional bonus for the attack. The midfield looks to be a strength with senior Sam Hamilton (2g, 0a), senior Karstein Hanlin (5g, 4a), senior Chandler Crosswait and junior Alex Underwood (3g, 3a) who were starters last year all returning. Redshirt senior All-American Reagan Dunk, junior center back Korte Ford and redshirt sophomore center back Scott DeVoss return in the back.
Graduating just two players from its 2015 roster, the 2016 Pioneers will open the season with an exhibition at Air Force and a four-match road swing in New Jersey and Illinois. Denver will open its 2016 home slate on Sept. 9 and 11, and will host its third-consecutive Summit League Tournament in November. FULL SCHEDULE.
