FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Following a 1-1 halftime score, junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored twice in the second half to send the University of Denver men's soccer program past Fort Wayne 3-1 on Saturday night at the Hefner Soccer Complex.

"From top to bottom, that was our best performance of the year," head coach Jamie Franks said. "They scored on one of their first chances of the game, which is never a good sign, but the resiliency that my guys showed is what makes them a dangerous group to play against. They never got down on themselves. We made a few adjustments at halftime, and I thought that we executed really well in the second half."

Redshirt-senior Kyle Morlack (Goodyear, Ariz.) scored his first goal since his true freshman season in 2013 to give the Pioneers a first half lead in the 19th minute. Morlack's last goal came against IUPUI, four years and two days ago. Saturday night's goal was the fourth of his career and was assisted by senior co-captain Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and corner kick taker Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden).

"Kyle is an extension of the coaching staff, and a real leader on this team," Franks said. "His hard work and grit makes him a leader by example in any organization. We're happy that Kyle was able to get back on the scoresheet tonight."

Fort Wayne equalized before the intermission when Oscar Uyamadu finished his fourth of the season from inside the 18 to pull the home side level in the 38th minute. Denver outshot Fort Wayne 6-4 in the first half, and took three of the four corners in the opening 45 minutes. Uyamadu's strike was the only shot on goal for Fort Wayne on Saturday night.

Denver turned up the attacking threat in the second half, taking eight of the nine shots in the frame, putting six of them on target. Shinyashiki converted from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute to give Denver the 2-1 advantage, and followed that up with a header off a Stensson free kick in the 78th minute for his third goal of the week.

Shinyashiki remains in sixth in DU's Division I history in points with 51, while moving up to third in career goals with 20 and third in game-winning goals with seven in his 2+-year career.

UP NEXT: Denver will continue a four-match road swing next Saturday when the Pioneers head to Oral Roberts. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT. The Pioneers will close out the road swing with a mid-week clash on October 25 at former MPSF rivals New Mexico (7 p.m. MT).
