ELMHURST, Ill. (DU/Summit) - The University of Denver men's soccer team placed a league-high five student-athletes on the 2017 Summit League Academic All-League Team, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Redshirt-sophomore midfielder Ryan Barlow (Coppell, Texas), senior outside back AJ Fuller (Littleton, Colo.), redshirt-junior goalkeeper Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) and midfield co-captains Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) all earned the academic honor.
Earlier this fall, the entire program was recognized as the national leader in grade point average for the second-consecutive year.
The Summit League Academic All-League Team as voted on by the institution faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors. A total of 14 student-athletes were named to the team and honored for their academic and athletic performances this season.
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions. The men's soccer all-league team is made up of the student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.
