Box Score Dec. 29, 2017
DENVER -
"I liked the way we played, I thought we battled hard," Denver coach Jim Montgomery said. "Obviously, our execution and our skill with the puck and our passing was not very good, but you expect that after a 10-day break. I thought we got better throughout the game and started playing with more pace and determination as the game went on."
Merrimack's Cole McBride opened the scoring at 2:38 of the first period, intercepting a pass in the neutral zone and carrying the puck to the net to beat Tanner Jaillet. The Pioneers responded with less than five (5) minutes remaining in the first period as Kohen Olischefski took a shot from below the goal line and benefited from a fortunate carom off the skate of Warriors goalie Craig Pantano. Henrik Borgström and Colin Staub assisted on Olischefski's goal.
Jaillet made the defining stop of the second period, turning aside a two-on-one rush at 6:10 of the frame to keep the score even. Denver followed the save with scoring chances of their own on a pair of power play opportunities, but the score held. The Pioneers took a 21-15 shot advantage into the second intermission.
The Warriors made it 2-1 at 8:14 of the third period when Seney capitalized on an odd-man rush. Only 44 seconds after scoring the go-ahead goal, Seney added another on the power play when he moved out of the corner and rifled a puck over the shoulder of Jaillet.
Denver brought the score to within one (1) goal with Ian Mitchell's power-play goal with 1:33 remaining in regulation, but the tally was not enough to make a difference. Borgström and Dylan Gambrell assisted on the goal.
Jaillet finished with 23 saves. Denver went 1/4 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill.
