COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The [7/9] University of Denver men's soccer team dropped its second-consecutive match on the east coast, falling to Maryland 1-0 on Tuesday night at Ludwig Field.
"Obviously it's a tough result when the other team scores in the first five or six minutes of the game and you put yourself in a hole like we did," head coach
Jamie Franks said. "This is the same problem that we continue to have. We don't approach the game with the right mentality. The student-athletes need to look at themselves and figure out what they want from the season. To be dominant in possession, put five shots on target and only give up two, and to come out with the wrong mentality again in a big game is disappointing. When we bring our fighting football mentality, we're one of the best teams in the country. When we don't have that, we're very, very average."
Maryland opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Paul Bin got on the end of a Chase Gasper cross from the left side and blasted it by
Will Palmquist (Denver, Colo.) from just outside the six-yard box.
The Terps held a 4-3 edge in shots in the first half, including the decisive goal. Denver put each of its three shots in the first half on target, but couldn't find the equalizer.
Denver had a good portion of the possession in the second half in search of the leveler, but DU's best chance in the second half on a combination between
Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) and
Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) went straight into keeper Dayne St. Clair's hands.
The Pioneers and Terps split the shots seven aside in the 90 minutes, and the Pioneers had a 6-2 edge in corners.
