PALO ALTO, Calif. – The [11/12] University of Denver men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 extra time result at [9/RV] Stanford on Friday night at Cagan Stadium.
Stanford's goal came in the 101
st minute when Zach Ryan got on the end of a Charlie Wehan cross, hitting it off the bottom of the crossbar and over the line to give the home side the game-winner in the second period of extra time.
"It's that time of the year, where mistakes cost you games," head coach Jamie Franks said. "I thought my guys played well, and were collective and resilient out there, but in knockout football, it takes one mistake. Stanford is really good at pumping the ball in the box and trying to get to second balls in the box and take advantage of your mistakes. Unfortunately we made a mistake there at the end, and they got the goal. I'm proud of the group, and we will grow from tonight. I look forward to watching my group compete for a regular season conference title next Saturday. These are the moments where my leaders need to step up; Saturday night under the lights at home for our first chance at a trophy this season."
Denver and Stanford played to a scoreless opening 45 minutes at Cagan Stadium. The three-time defending National Champions outshot the Pioneers 9-5 in the first half with both teams putting two shots on target. Neither team had a clear-cut opportunity, but the Pioneers created two of the three corners prior to the intermission.
The Cardinal outshot the Pioneers 8-4 in the second 45, a stanza that featured four saves from redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper
Will Palmquist (Denver, Colo.).
Palmquist finished the match with seven stops.
