McCoy Fires 1-under as Pioneers 12th after 18 holes

Denver shoots 2-over at Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational
PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii – The University of Denver Golf team got a great opening-round performance from Cal McCoy on the way to placing 12th after 18 holes at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on Sunday. The Pioneers fired a team score of 290, 2-over-par.
Par at the Makai Golf Club at Princeville was 72.
No. 11 Pepperdine closed out day one atop the team leaderboard at 15-under, three strokes ahead of 37th-ranked Ole Miss in the 20-team field.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Esteban Missura, Eric Hagen, Roy Kang, Carson Griggs and McCoy.
Sophomores Jackson Solem and John Sand also competed, but as individuals.
"As a team, we shot two over counting a 71, 72, 72 and 75," Billinger said. "We were so close to shooting under par but didn't quite finish how we wanted to. The course played wet today and a bit longer with this weather blowing in but we still need to clean up some mistakes and make some more putts.
"We are right there and we get two more cracks at it, so I am looking forward to watching these guys over the next two days play confidently and compete hard."
McCoy's 1-under effort on Sunday helped power the Pioneers, putting him in a tie for 30th. The Highlands Ranch native was dominant for long stretches on the course on the day, recording six birdies, giving him his third round this year with a par-or-better score.
Hagen and Griggs each tied for 41st, scoring a par of even-par 72s for the afternoon.
Missura wrapped up his first round of the tournament with a 3-over 75.
Kang finished up Sunday with an 81.
Sand shot a 1-under 71 to tie for 30th with McCoy
Solem put up a 75 in his first crack at the course.
Second round is set for Monday.
