Game Preview: No. 5 Denver vs. No. 2 St. Cloud State

The Denver Pioneers men's hockey team (5-0-1, 2-0-0-0) looks to continue its undefeated start to the season in an NCHC road series against No. 2 St. Cloud State (7-1-0, 2-0-0-0) on Nov. 9-10 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Friday's puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m MT.

DENVER: SNAPSHOT
• Freshman Emilio Pettersen leads the Pioneers with 11 points (3-8-11)
• The Pioneers are undefeated through six games for the first time since starting 9-0-0 in the 2001-02 season
• Denver scores 4.33 goals per game, tied for 2nd-most in the NCAA, and allows 1.67 goals per game, tied for 4th-fewest in the NCAA
• The Pioneers have outscored their opponents 26-10 and 8-3 in the third period

Jarid Lukosevicius had five goals on the weekend, recording a hat trick on Nov. 2 and the overtime winner on Nov. 3
Ian Mitchell had four assists on the weekend
• Denver finished the weekend 4/10 on the power play and 4/5 on the penalty kill
Devin Cooley made 49 saves on 54 shots

• Denver hosts No. 1 Minnesota Duluth for the first time since defeating the 2018 National Champion, 3-1, in the semifinal of the 2018 NCHC Frozen Faceoff
• The Pioneers are 124-77-12 all-time against the Bulldogs, going 5-0-0 last season
 
ST. CLOUD STATE: SNAPSHOT
• The Huskies have won six of seven games to start the season, their only loss coming at Northeastern on Oct. 27 (3-2)
• St. Cloud State scores 4.25 goals per game, 8th-most in the NCAA, and allows 1.50 goals per game, 3rd-fewest in the NCAA
• The Huskies convert at 27.6% on the power play, tied for 8th in the NCAA, and 91.9% on the penalty kill, 1st in the NCAA
• Of St. Cloud State's 34 goals, 24% have been scored in the first period and 41% have been scored in the third period

• Ryan Poehling, Jimmy Schuldt and Robby Jackson each notched three points on the road in Colorado Springs, Colo.
• St. Cloud State trailed through the second period in both games, but outscored the Tigers 6-1 in the third periods
• The Huskies went 3/7 on the power play and 9/11 on the penalty kill
• David Hrenak made 41 saves on 45 shots
 
ST. CLOUD STATE: UP NEXT
St. Cloud State vs. Bemidji State - Nov. 16-17
• The Huskies host the Beavers for a two-game series at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center
• St. Cloud State defeated Bemidji State, 2-1, in their last meeting on Jan. 27, 2017 at the Xcel Energy Center
 
NCHC/NCAA HONORS
Emilio Pettersen was named NCHC Rookie of the Month for October after registering two goals, six assists and a +7 rating 
Jarid Lukosevicius was named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week and NCAA First Star of the Week after recording five goals, nine shots and a +1 rating against Western Michigan on Nov. 2-3
Ian Mitchell was named NCHC Defensive Player of the Week after notching four assists, four shots and an even rating against Western Michigan on Nov. 2-3
 
FIRST IN CLASS
• Denver's freshmen class has combined for 26 points (7-19-26), 1st in the NCAA
Emilio Pettersen is 1st among NCAA freshmen with 11 points (3-8-11)
Cole Guttman and Emilio Pettersen are tied for 7th among NCAA freshmen with a +7 rating
 
HOT STREAKS
Jarid Lukosevicius is on a six-game point streak with seven goals and three assists
Ian Mitchell is on a four-game point streak with seven assists
Emilio Pettersen has three goals and eight assists in his last six games
Liam Finlay has six goals and three assists in his last six games
 
TOUGH SCHEDULE
• The Pioneers are set to match up against the top three teams in the nation in the next three weeks with No. 2 St. Cloud State (Nov. 9-10), No. 1 Minnesota Duluth (Nov. 16-17) and No. 3 Providence (Nov. 23-24)
 
MILLER HOCKEY COMPLEX
• The new home of Denver hockey is named after University of Denver's Board of Trustees member John A. Miller, his wife, Sandy, and their family.
• The 4,464 square foot space houses the Pioneers' lockers, lounge, sauna, kitchen, training room and equipment room
• More than 150 donors contributed to the renovation
 
YOUNG PIONEERS
• At 29, David Carle is the youngest coach in Division I college hockey
• The Pioneers have the fourth-youngest team in college hockey with an average age of 20 years/8 months
• At 24, Colin Staub is Denver's oldest player and more than six years older than Brendan Budy (18), the Pioneers' youngest player
• The Pioneers have 20 freshmen and sophomores, the most since the 2007-08 season when Tyler Bozak was a freshman
 
NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING
Brendan Budy and Sean Comrie were each named to the NHL Central Scouting preliminary players to watch list for the 2019 NHL Draft, receiving C ratings as potential fourth, fifth or sixth round selections
 
EXPERIENCED STAFF
• Assistant Coach Tavis MacMillan served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2004-07
• Assistant Coach Dallas Ferguson served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2008-17
• Volunteer Assistant Coach Steven Reinprecht played 663 NHL games over 11 NHL seasons, winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001
• Team Manager Ben Scrivens played 144 NHL games over five NHL seasons in addition to representing Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics
