DENVER – Jarid Lukosevicius scored twice on the power play early in the third period to give the Denver Pioneers (10-4-2, 4-4-0) a 4-1 win against the UMass Lowell River Hawks (8-8-1, 4-4-1) on Saturday in the Tsongas Center.
Lukosevicius' linemates supported his efforts as
Cole Guttman logged a goal and two assists, while
Emilio Pettersen finished with two assists.
Filip Larsson made 20 saves in his second career victory.
"It was an uncharacteristic start for our group," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle said. "For whatever reason we needed to take a couple punches to the nose to get woken up tonight…After the 10-minute mark we got our legs going, started pressuring pucks, possessing pucks, simplified our game more and it led to some offensive opportunities. I think that helped us build some momentum."
Lowell opened the game with a furious attack and appeared to capitalize with a wrist shot at 5:02 of the first period, though the apparent goal was disallowed as
Filip Larsson drew interference on the play. The Pioneers found their step as the period continued, closing the shot margin to 9-6 for the River Hawks by the end of the period. Larrson's sprawling stop on Ryan Lohin's shot with 6:55 left in the first period kept it 0-0 as the teams went into the locker room.
Penalties defined the early portion of the middle frame as the Pioneers began the period on the man advantage and, through a series of power plays and penalty kills, didn't skate five-on-five for more than three minutes until midway through the period.
Slava Demin's shot off the post during Denver's second power play marked the Pioneers' best chance of the night until 16:47 when Pettersen found Guttman streaking toward the net for a shot past Tyler Wall.
Griffin Mendel had the secondary assist on Guttman's eighth goal of the season.
The Pioneers extended their 1-0 lead with a pair of power play goals to start the third period. Lukosevicius made it 2-0 at 3:17 of the third on a one-timer from Pettersen and Guttman, then added another at 5:23 as he collected the puck in front of the net and fired his second shot past Wall. Olischefski and Guttman assisted on Lukosevicius' second goal of the night and 10
th of the season.
Seth Barton put the River Hawks on the board on the power play at 12:39 of the third with a slap shot through traffic, though the River Hawks' hopes for a late-game comeback were thwarted at 17:45 when
Ryan Barrow toe-dragged toward the net then slipped past the defenseman to chip a shot past Wall.
The Pioneers finished 2/4 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill. Lowell outshot Denver, 21-17.
Denver's win pushed its record to 4-3-0 on the road and 6-0-1 against non-conference opponents.
