March 10, 2018

DENVER -

BOX SCORE

The University of Denver Pioneers (6-5, 2-1) defeated Weber State, 5-2, on Saturday at Life Time Fitness in Denver, Colo.

The Pioneers opened the match with the doubles point as Mattia Ros and Pedro Fernandez Del Valle won, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles and Jorge Nunez and Wyatt Lovera won, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles.

The singles matches were closely contested with three Pioneers playing tiebreakers in their first set. Ros opened singles play with a 6-2, 1-0 (ret.) victory at No. 1. Jesse Ruder-Hook followed suit with consecutive 6-4 set wins to move Denver’s lead to 3-0. Fernandez Del Valle secured the match victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6. Matt Summers closed the match with a 6-7 (1-7), 7-5, 12-10 win at No. 2 singles. Summers trailed 9-3 in the tiebreaker before mounting a comeback.

“It was a great team effort,” Denver coach Ricardo Rubio said. “It was a great job by Matt Summers coming back and Pedro Fernandez Del Valle clinching the match. Weber State is a good team and we now have a little bit of a break to get better.”

Denver is set to return to action on March 21 against San Diego State.
