SUMMIT LEAGUE RELEASE
ELMHURST, Ill. - University of Denver men's basketball senior Jake Pemberton was named to the Summit Academic All-League team on Wednesday in a release by the league. The honor is given to players from around the league who have succeeded both on the court and in the classroom this past season.
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of his team's competitions.
The Highlands Ranch native joins North Dakota State's Paul Miller and A.J. Jacobson, Oral Robert's Albert Owens and South Dakota State's Reed Tellinghuisen on the team.
"It's not a surprise to me that Jake competes in the classroom just like he does on the court," head coach Rodney Billups said. "Jake has been a great model for our young guys and this accomplishment is a reflection of that. I'm very proud of him and this will be celebrated."
Pemberton owns a 3.51 GPA and is majoring in criminology and journalism. The senior guard averaged 11.1 points and dished out 2.8 assists per game this season. He knocked down 47.2 percent (119-of-252) of his shots, including 45.2 percent (56-of-124) from 3-point range.
"I'm honored to have been selected to the academic all-league team," Pemberton said. "The support from my coaches, parents and peers helped so much and cannot thank them enough for everything that they have done for me during my time here at the University of Denver."
The former Mountain Vista star really stepped up his game during his senior year, recording four games with at least 20 points. The 6-foot-4 guard also dished out a season-high 10 assists in a win over Oral Roberts on Feb. 18. He also notched five games with at least 10 points and five rebounds.
The 2017-18 Summit League Academic All-League Team is voted on by the league's faculty athletic representatives and sports information directors. Student-athletes were chosen for the honor based on their academic and athletic performances this season.
