Box Score DENVER—
The University of Denver women's volleyball team defeated Navy 3-0 to open the Denver Invitational with 524 fans in attendance. The Pioneers overtook the Midshipmen by scores of 25-14, 25-17, and 26-24.
Denver remains undefeated at home (7-0) and pushed its winning streak to six matches.
Bartalo's Savage Serves:
Sophomore Lydia Bartalo
leads the team with 24 service aces this season, tallying two against Navy. She entered the weekend ranked ninth in the NCAA in total service aces. Bartalo also sits at 15th in aces per set (0.61).
Defense Wins Matches:
The Pioneers spread the defensive duties evenly against Navy, with five athletes tallying five-plus digs. Bartalo again led the team with nine digs, followed by Ellie Anderson
(8), Katarina Marinkovic
(6), Lauren McManus
(6) and Olivia Novotny
(5). Anderson handed out a team-high 17 assists, and sits atop the DU leaderboard with 233 assists this season.
Denver entered set three trailing behind Navy for the first time in the match. It wasn't until McManus took to the service line that the Pioneers prevailed, sparking a five-point run that tied match at 16 all.
The Pioneers totaled 41 kills in 103 attempts (.204 hitting percentage) against Navy. They also finished up with 35 assists, 46 digs, seven aces and eight blocks.
Denver held Navy to a .040 hitting percentage in the match, with a -.097 hit percentage in set two.
What's Next for the Pioneers:
DU will continue its efforts in day two of the Denver Invitational on Saturday, facing Maryland Eastern Shore at 11 a.m. and Samford at 7 p.m. MT. Next week on Friday, Sept. 21, the Pioneers will begin conference play against Oral Roberts in Oklahoma.
