Pioneers Earn Second Straight Sweep Against Saint Peter’s

Denver held the Peacocks to 27 points, the Pioneers fewest points allowed in the rally scoring era

DENVER— The University of Denver women's volleyball team defeated Saint Peter's 3-0 for its second straight sweep of the Pioneer Showdown. The Crimson and Gold took down the Peacocks in three sets by scores of 25-7, 25-9, and 25-11.

DU improves to 7-1 for the 2018 season and remains undefeated in Hamilton Gymnasium (5-0).

Superstar Starters:
The starting seven for Denver were Becca Latham (OH), Emma Willis (MB), Ellie Anderson (S), Katarina Marinkovic (OH), Lydia Bartalo (OH), Tina Boe (MB), and Macy Carrabine (L).
 
Senior Becca Latham led the Pioneers with 11 kills, hitting .500 and recording three blocks against Saint Peter's. Katarina Marinkovic posted eight kills with four digs and four blocks, and Emma Willis tallied four blocks as well.
 
Okay Mara Abernethy, We See You:
Freshman Mara Abernethy earned two season highs with three kills (.750 hitting percentage in four attempts) and four blocks.
 
Running Away With It:
Denver ended the opening set on a 12-point run against the Peacocks. Sophomore Lydia Bartalo tallied three services aces to lead DU to a first set victory.
 
In the second set the Pioneers went on a 7-1 run to ultimately win 25-9, and in set three a serve sequence from Katarina Marinkovic led to another seven-point run for Denver.
 
Let's Talk Numbers:
DU tallied 39 kills, .492 hitting percentage, seven aces, 36 digs, and nine blocks. In 33 sets this season, Denver has notched over 1,000 attack attempts (1,027).
 
The Pioneers held Saint Peter's to 27 total points this match, Denver's fewest points allowed in the rally scoring era (2001). The previous low was 30-points against Jackson State on Aug. 29, 2014.
 
What's Next for DU:
DU will continue its efforts in the Pioneer Showdown Saturday evening at 7 p.m. MT against Idaho State. The Bengals are 2-0 in the tournament, having defeated Saint Peter's 3-0 on Friday, Sept. 7 and Fairleigh Dickinson 3-0 Saturday morning. The match will be broadcast live on Altitude 2.
