Game Preview: No. 7 Denver vs. North Dakota

The No. 7 Denver Pioneers men's hockey team (14-6-3, 6-6-1-1) host the North Dakota Fighting Hawks (13-11-1, 7-7-0-0) for a two-game series at Magness Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

DENVER: SNAPSHOT
• Denver was swept last weekend for the first time since Nov. 9-10 at St. Cloud State and has lost consecutive games for only the second time this season
• The Pioneers average 3.22 goals per game, 11th in the NCAA, and allow an average of 2.35 goals per game, 13th in the NCAA
• Denver is 2/25 (8%) on the power play and 12/19 (63.2%) on the penalty kill in the last five games
Liam Finlay leads the Pioneers with 25 points, followed by each member of Denver's top line: Emilio Pettersen (22), Jarid Lukosevicius (21) and Cole Guttman (18)

• Denver lost their third and fourth-straight games at Lawson Arena
• The Pioneers were limited to one or fewer goals in a game for only the third and fourth times this season
• Denver went 1/14 on the power play and 5/8 on the penalty kill
 
DENVER: UP NEXT
Denver vs. Minnesota Duluth (Feb. 15-16, 2019)
• The Pioneers and Bulldogs will continue their season series in Duluth, Minn. after splitting their series in Denver on Nov. 16-17 where the Pioneers won 2-0 Friday and lost 4-3 (OT) on Saturday
• Denver is 125-78-12 all-time against Minnesota Duluth
 
NORTH DAKOTA: SNAPSHOT
• The Fighting Hawks have dropped two of their last three games, splitting last weekend against St. Cloud State
• North Dakota averages 2.64 goals per game, 37th in the NCAA, and 2.52 goals against per game, T-20th in the NCAA
• Jordan Kawaguchi leads the Fighting Hawks with 18 points (6-12-18)
• Three of North Dakota's top five scorers are defensemen. Blue liners account for 28% of North Dakota's goal scoring and 34% of the team's total points

• Dixon Bowen and Gavin Hain each had two-goal weekends
• Adam Scheel made 55 saves on 58 shots en route to being named NCHC Rookie of the Week

North Dakota at Western Michigan (Feb. 15-16, 2018)
• The Fighting Hawks will travel to close their season series with the Broncos after getting swept in North Dakota on Nov. 16-17 by scores of 2-0 and 6-2

DENVER VS. NORTH DAKOTA
• The Pioneers split the series with the Fighting Hawks on Dec. 7-8 in Grand Forks, N.D. (4-1 L, 2-1 W - OT)
• Denver is 124-146-14 all-time against North Dakota
• The teams first played on Feb. 1, 1950 with the Fighting Hawks winning 18-3 in Denver's inaugural season

Tyler Ward was named NCHC Rookie of the Month on Jan. 30 after recording three goals and two assists in January, including a game-winning goal on Jan. 4 at Wisconsin

Emilio Pettersen, Jarid Lukosevicius and Cole Guttman have combined for 30% of the Pioneers' even-strength points and 39% of the Pioneers' even-strength goals

Jarid Lukosevicius has the all-time school record and is the NCAA active leader in career game-winning goals with 18. The all-time career leader is Austin Ortega (Omaha '14-'17 - 23)
 
TOUGH ROAD AHEAD
• Denver's strength of schedule ranks 2nd in the NCAA according to the KRACH ranking on CollegeHockeyNews.com
• After wrapping up the non-conference schedule with an 8-0-2 record, Denver has 14-straight conference games to close the regular season
 
FRESH FACES
• Denver's freshmen class is 2nd in NCAA scoring with 82 points (29-53-82)
• The Pioneers' freshmen class accounts for 40% of the of the team's total points and 39% of the team's total goals
Emilio Pettersen is T-3rd among NCAA freshman with 22 points
Cole Guttman is T- 2nd among NCAA freshmen with 10 goals
Slava Demin is 3rd among NCAA freshmen with a +17 plus/minus rating, while Guttman is 4th with a +15 plus/minus rating
 
WORKING OVERTIME
• The Pioneers have played eight overtime games this season, T-2nd-most in the NCAA. Denver is 4-1-3 in the extra period with the most overtime wins in the NCAA
 
MILLER HOCKEY COMPLEX
• The new home of Denver hockey is named after University of Denver's Board of Trustees member John A. Miller, his wife, Sandy, and their family
• The 4,464 square foot space houses the Pioneers' lockers, lounge, sauna, kitchen, training room and equipment room
• More than 150 donors contributed to the $2.5 million renovation
 
YOUNG PIONEERS
• At 29, David Carle is the youngest coach in Division I college hockey
• The Pioneers have the fourth-youngest team in college hockey with an average age of 20 years/8 months
• The Pioneers have 20 freshmen and sophomores, the most since the 2007-08 season when Tyler Bozak was a freshman
 
EXPERIENCED STAFF
• Assistant Coach Tavis MacMillan served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2004-07
• Assistant Coach Dallas Ferguson served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2008-17
• Volunteer Assistant Coach Steven Reinprecht played 663 NHL games over 11 NHL seasons, winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001
• Team Manager Ben Scrivens played 144 NHL games over five NHL seasons in addition to representing Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics
