Game Preview: No. 2 Denver vs. Lake Superior State

The No. 2 Denver Pioneers (3-0-0, 0-0-0-0) seek to complete their season-opening road trip with a perfect record as they drop the puck against the Lake Superior State Lakers on Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault. Ste. Marie Mich. at 5 p.m. MT.

Denver beat Lake Superior State 3-1 on Friday, responding from an early 1-0 deficit to score late in the second period and twice in the third. Emilio Pettersen and Bobby Brink paced the Pioneers with two points each, while freshman goalie Magnus Chrona made 23 saves in his third straight win. Chrona enters tonight's game with a 3-0-0 record, 1.33 GAA and .953 SV%.

LAST GAME: DENVER 3, LAKE SUPERIOR STATE 1
• The Lakers started the scoring with Ashton Calder's shorthanded goal at 12:02 of the first period, but the Pioneers responded to score at 18:20 of the second period and twice in the third to take their third straight victory
• Denver went 4/4 on the penalty kill with a shorthanded insurance goal at 18:56 of the third period to secure the win
• Ian Mitchell, Emilio Pettersen and Jaakko Heikkinen scored for Denver. Pettersen and Bobby Brink had two-point games. Mitchell scored in his second straight game
 
DENVER: SNAPSHOT
• The Pioneers are 14/14 on the penalty kill with two shorthanded goals from Ian Mitchell and Jaakko Heikkinen
• Each member of Denver's top line (Pettersen-Guttman-Brink) has three points
• Freshman goalie Magnus Chrona has turned aside 51 of 52 shots in the last two games with a 28-save shutout against Alaska Fairbanks

• Freshman goalie Magnus Chrona played both games, making 58 saves on 61 shots for a .951 SV% and a 1.50 GAA. He made 28 saves in his first career shutout on Sunday
• Ryan Barrow, Liam Finlay and Ian Mitchell recorded points in both games
 
DENVER: UP NEXT
October 18-19, 2019 vs. Boston College (Magness Arena)
• The Pioneers will host Homecoming against the Eagles. Denver is 17-15-0 all-time against Boston College, having won three of the last five meetings. The Pioneers beat the Eagles 6-1 in Boston in their last matchup on Oct. 28, 2017
 
LAKE SUPERIOR STATE: SNAPSHOT
• LSSU has received votes in the USCHO.com poll for two consecutive weeks
• The Lakers swept Merrimack to the start the season for the second straight year
• Junior Hampus Eriksson leads LSSU with five points (1-4-5)
• LSSU is coming off its best season in 23 years, going 23-12-2 (WCHA 16-10-2-0) in 2018-19 to finish fourth in the conference and take home ice advantage in the WCHA playoffs for the first time since joining the conference in 2013
 
LAKE SUPERIOR STATE: LAST SERIES
LSSU 6, Merrimack 2 | LSSU 4, Merrimack 3
• Thirteen Lakers recorded at least one point and nine Lakers scored at least one goal. Hampus Eriksson was the only player to score twice
• LSSU went 1/7 on the power play and 7/7 on the penalty kill
 
LAKE SUPERIOR STATE: UP NEXT
Oct. 18-19, 2019 at Michigan
• The Lakers will travel to play the Wolverines after splitting their home series vs. Michigan last season. After their trip to Ann Arbor, LSSU travels to No. 9 Notre Dame
 
DENVER VS. LAKE SUPERIOR STATE
• The Pioneers are 4-0-1 all-time against the Lakers
• This marks Denver's first trip to LSSU in program history
• The Pioneers went 1-0-1 vs. the Lakers in 2017, winning 5-1 and tying 3-3
 
HOMECOMING FOR MELDRUM
• Pioneer equipment manager Nick Meldrum graduated from Lake Superior State in 2007. In his 11th season at Denver, Meldrum came to the Mile High City following two years with the USNDTP, winning a gold medal with the Americans at the 2009 IIHF World U18 Championship and a silver medal at the 2007 World U17 Challenge. Meldrum won a silver medal with the Americans at the 2019 World Junior Championship
 
70TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
• The Pioneers are playing in their 70th Anniversary Season. Since its inaugural season in 1949, Denver has made 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, 17 appearances in the Frozen Four and won eight National Championships, tied for the second-most titles among any college hockey program
• More than 150 alumni representing more than 60 years of Denver Hockey are expected to attend the 70th Anniversary Weekend set for Nov. 1-2 vs. Niagara

UP NEXT:
Denver will close their series with Lake Superior State on Saturday, Oct. 12 before returning to Magness Arena for their first home series of the season on Oct. 18-19 vs. Boston College.
