Game Preview: No. 1 Denver vs. No. 6 Boston College Presented By Safeway

The No. 1 Denver Pioneers (5-0-0, NCHC 0-0-0-0) look to continue their winning streak and complete the sweep against the No. 6 Boston College Eagles (2-1-0, Hockey East 0-0-0-0) on Saturday at Magness Arena.
 
Denver beat Boston College 3-0 in Friday's home opener, using a 23-save shutout from Magnus Chrona and second-period power-play goal from Cole Guttman to remain unbeaten. Tyson McLellan and Brett Stapley added empty-netters in the final minute to secure the Pioneers' victory.

• Freshmen goalies Magnus Chrona and Spencer Knight shined in net. Chrona posted a 23-save shutout, while Knight made 28 saves on 29 shots faced
• Cole Guttman's power-play goal at 3:21 of the second period was the difference before Tyson McLellan and Brett Stapley added empty-netters in the final minute
• Denver went 1/4 on the power play and 1/1 on the penalty kill
 
DENVER: SNAPSHOT
• Denver began the season with a 10-day road trip through Fairbanks, Alaska and Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Pioneers traveled more than 9,900 miles in ten days
• The Pioneers are 19/19 on the penalty kill with two shorthanded goals
• Denver's top line of Pettersen-Guttman-Brink has combined for three even-strength goals and nine even-strength points. Sixteen skaters have at least one point
• Freshman goalie Magnus Chrona has a 5-0-0 record with a 1.40 GAA and .947 save percentage

• Following a bye week, the Pioneers will host Niagara for their 70th Anniversary Weekend. Denver is 3-0-0 all-time against the Purple Eagles, last meeting in 2007
 
BOSTON COLLEGE: SNAPSHOT
• Boston College ranks 6th in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll
• Senior forwards David Cotton and Julius Mattila lead the Eagles with six points on two goals and four assists each. Top-liners Cotton, Mattila and Logan Hutsko are +11 with five of the team's eight goals and 14 of its 20 points. Hutsko did not play on Oct. 18
• Freshman goalie Spencer Knight is 2-1-0 with a 1.34 GAA and .957 SV%. He was selected 13th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2019 NHL Draft
• After a stretch of seven-straight NCAA tournament appearances and two National Championships from 2010-16, Boston College has missed the NCAA tournament the last four seasons

Oct. 25, 2019 vs. Providence (Conte Forum)
• The Eagles will host the Friars for their third home game of the season in a one-game weekend. Providence ranks 13th in the USCHO.com poll and 12th in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll
 
DENVER VS. BOSTON COLLEGE
• Denver is 18-15-0 all-time against Boston College
• The Pioneers won the last meeting 6-1 at the Conte Forum on Oct. 28, 2017
• Before the 2018-19 season, Denver and Boston College played at least once in each of the previous five seasons with the Eagles holding a 4-3-0 record
 
NCHC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
• Ian Mitchell was named NCHC Defenseman of the Week and Bobby Brink was named NCHC Rookie of the Week for games played between Oct. 5- Oct. 13
• Mitchell and Brink each have two goals and two assists through four games
 
PROSPECT PALOOZA
• The Pioneers (7) and Eagles (12) combine for 19 NHL Draft picks with Boston College having two Colorado Avalanche prospects, Alex Newhook and Drew Helleson
• Denver and Boston College combine for three 1st-rounders and three 2nd-rounders
 
BARROW BURIES
• Ryan Barrow leads Denver with three goals this season, including the game-winner with :20 remaining against Lake Superior State on Oct. 12. The junior forward entered the season with nine career goals, registering five last season
 
70TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
• The Pioneers are playing in their 70th Anniversary Season. Since its inaugural season in 1949, Denver has made 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, 17 appearances in the Frozen Four and won eight National Championships, tied for the second-most titles among any college hockey program
• More than 150 alumni representing more than 60 years of Denver Hockey are expected to attend the 70th Anniversary Weekend on Nov. 1-2 vs. Niagara
 
UP NEXT: Denver closes its Homecoming series on Saturday, Oct. 19 vs. No. 6 Boston College before returning to Magness Arena for 70th Anniversary Weekend against Niagara on Nov. 1-2.
