Game Preview: No. 1 Denver vs. Niagara

The No. 1 Denver Pioneers (6-0-0, NCHC 0-0-0-0) look to extend their six-game winning streak with a series against the Niagara Purple Eagles (0-4-0, AHA 0-0-0-0) beginning Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:07 p.m. at Magness Arena. The two-game set headlines the Pioneers' 70th Anniversary Weekend which is slated to host more than 160 alumni representing more than 60 years of Denver Hockey.  The series also marks the Pioneers' last non-conference games before NCHC play begins Oct. 8-9 on the road against Minnesota Duluth.
 
Friday is Military Appreciation Night. All active/former members of the military can receive $10 upper-end tickets by using the promo code MILITARY. On Saturday, the Pioneers will continue their 70th Anniversary Weekend celebration with the debut of their alternate jerseys and salute to alumni throughout the night.

Dawg Nation, a Denver-based non-profit dedicated to serving those in need in the hockey community, will host a sled hockey exhibition at the first intermission with Warrior Avs and DU alumni, Gabe Gauthier and Luke Fulghum

DENVER: SNAPSHOT
• At 6-0-0, Denver is one of only three unbeaten teams remaining in college hockey. This marks the Pioneers' best start since 2001-02 when the team started 9-0-0. Denver was 5-0-1 to start last season
• The Pioneers are 24/25 (96.0%) on the penalty kill with two shorthanded goals, 2nd in the NCAA in both categories 
Liam Finlay leads Denver with eight points (1-7-8), while Ian Michell is second in scoring with seven points (3-4-7), riding a six-game point streak
Magnus Chrona has played every minute in net with a .930 SV% and 1.83 GAA, 2nd among NCAA freshmen in both categories  
• The Pioneers have a +12 goal margin, 5th in the NCAA
 
LAST SERIES: DU 3, BC 0 | DU 6, BC 4 (OCT. 18-19, 2019)
Tyson McLellan (3-0-3) Liam Finlay (1-2-3), Ian Mitchell (1-2-3) and Hank Crone (0-3-3) each had three-point weekends, while Magnus Chrona made 45 saves on 49 shots with a 23-save shutout on Friday
• The Pioneers went 4/12 (33.3%) on the power play and 6/7 (85.7%) on the penalty kill
 
DENVER: UP NEXT
Nov. 8-9 at Minnesota Duluth (AMSOIL Arena)
• After three weeks at home, the Pioneers will open conference play on the road with a series against Minnesota Duluth. Denver went 2-3-0 against Minnesota Duluth last year. The Pioneers are 126-80-12 all-time against the Bulldogs and 17-6-2 in the last seven years with 15 of those games being decided by one or fewer goals and an additional four being decided by two goals with an empty-netter
 
NIAGARA: SNAPSHOT
• The Purple Eagles are searching for their first win of the season after dropping a road series vs. Minnesota and home series vs. Sacred Heart
• Ryan Cook (1-1-2), Cam Cook (1-1-2) and Scott Persson (0-2-2) lead the Purple Eagles with two points each, while Brian Wilson has played 3/4 games with a .894 SV% and 3.03 GAA
• Niagara is 0/15 (0.0%) on the power play and 11/17 on the penalty kill (64.7%)
 
NIAGARA: UP NEXT
Nov. 8-9, 2019 vs. RIT (Dwyer Arena & Gene Polisseni Center)
• Niagara will play a home-and-home series with RIT for its second conference series of the season. The Purple Eagles will play on the road on Friday and host the Tigers on Saturday. Niagara was 2-2-1 vs. RIT last season, winning 1-0 (OT) in the semifinal of the Atlantic Hockey playoffs
 
DENVER VS. NIAGARA
• Denver is 3-0-0 all-time against Niagara with each game being played at Magness Arena
• The Pioneers swept the series that last time they faced the Purple Eagles on Jan. 12-13, 2007 (2-1 W, 5-2 W)
 
NON-CONFERENCE STREAK
• The Pioneers are undefeated in 17 straight non-conference games with a 15-0-2 mark in that stretch
• Denver is 20-2-4 against non-conference opponents since the 2017-18 season
 
NCHC FORWARD OF THE WEEK
Tyson McLellan was named NCHC Forward of the Week on Oct. 21 for his three-goal performance against Boston College. The senior forward finished the weekend with a team-leading nine shots and +3 rating

Ian Mitchell is on a six-game point streak with three goals and four assists
Emilio Pettersen is on a four-game point streak with one goal and four assists
Liam Finlay is on a three-game point streak with one goal and four assists
 
70TH ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND
• More than 160 alumni representing more than 60 years of Denver Hockey are expected to attend the 70th Anniversary Weekend on Nov. 1-2 vs. Niagara
• Denver will debut its 70th Anniversary Season alternate jerseys on Nov. 2. The jerseys will be worn on a rotation throughout the season following their unveiling
• The Pioneers are playing in their 70th Anniversary Season. Since its inaugural season in 1949, Denver has made 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, 17 appearances in the Frozen Four and won eight National Championships, tied for the second-most titles among any college hockey program
