Denver goes low in opening round
DENVER – The University of Denver men's golf wrapped up day one of the Ron Moore Invitational on Friday. The Pioneers fired a team score of 276 (8-under) on the afternoon, finishing tied for first place.
Par for the 7,285-yard course was 71.
The Pioneers had two teams in the field. The first team included Connor Jones, John Sand, Jun Ho Won, Esteban Missura, and Cal McCoy. Head coach Erik Billinger went with Brady Arnett, Roy Kang, Jackson Solem, Carson Griggs, and Eric Hagen on the second team.
Wyoming is tied with Denver at 8-under.
"Solid start from the guys," Billinger said. "We had seven of the 10 players shoot under par, which was awesome. It was an all-around team effort today, no one went real low and everybody contributed. We just need to stay focused and get a few more putts to drop and have a couple players get hot to really help the team score.
"The course is playing fast and it's a lot of fun right now, hats off to our superintendent and his staff."
Seven Pioneers –Solem, Kang, Ho Won, Jones, McCoy, Sand, and Missura – are in the top-10 after the first round. Solem, Kang, and McCoy are tied for second at 3-under par (68). Ho Won and Jones both fired a 69 (2-under) on the first 18, sitting tied for seventh. Sand and Missura added rounds below par, shooting 1-under and tying for 10th headed into the second round.
Arnett finished the first round at even-par to sit tied for 14th, while Carson Griggs is tied for 25th with a score of 73 (2-over) and Eric Hagen is tied for 48th with a 80 (9-over).
Round two is set for Saturday with a 8:30 am MT start.
