Snap Shots: Week 2

After sweeping Alaska Fairbanks to start the season, the No. 2 Denver Pioneers men's hockey team (2-0-0, 0-0-0-0) will continue their 10-day road trip with a series at Lake Superior State on Oct. 11-12.  The Lakers swept Merrimack last weekend and are receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll. Denver is 3-0-1 all-time against Lake Superior State, last meeting in October 2017. This will mark the Pioneers' first trip to Lake Superior in program history as well as a homecoming for Denver equipment manager Nick Meldrum, who graduated from Lake Superior State in 2007.

Pioneers in the Polls
-For the second-straight week, Denver ranked 2nd in the USCHO.com poll and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. The Pioneers earned 10 first-place votes in the USCHO.com poll
 
Denver: Snapshot
-The Pioneers went 1/9 on the power play and 10/10 on the penalty kill with a shorthanded goal against Alaska Fairbanks
-Junior Liam Finlay leads the Pioneers in points (3) and assists (3). Ryan Barrow leads Denver in goals (2)
-Freshman goalie Magnus Chrona played both games last weekend, making 58 saves on 61 shots for a .951 SV% and a 1.50 GAA. He made 28 saves in his first career shutout on Saturday
-Four freshmen made their collegiate debuts last weekend: Bobby Brink, Justin Lee, Magnus Chrona and Brett Edwards. Brink was the only freshman to register a point with his first career goal in his first career game
 
Denver vs. Lake Superior State
-The Pioneers are 6-2-1 all-time against the Nanooks
-Denver's last loss to Alaska Fairbanks was on Oct. 18, 2013 (3-2)
 
70th Anniversary Season
-The Pioneers are set for their 70th Anniversary Season. Since the inaugural season in 1949, Denver has made 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, 17 appearances in the Frozen Four and won eight National Championships, the tied for the second-most titles among any college hockey program
-70th Anniversary Weekend is set for Nov. 1-2 vs. Niagara. More than 150 alumni representing more than 60 years of Denver Hockey are expected to attend
 
Surging Sophomores
-The Pioneers return every skater from last year's freshman class which accounted for 35% of the team's point scoring and 30% of the team's goal scoring
-Three freshmen were among Denver's top six skaters last season
 
2019-20 Captains
-Ian Mitchell will serve as captain for the 2019-20 season, while Tyson McLellan and Michael Davies will serve as alternates
 
The Next Leaders
-Three members of the freshmen class were captains or alternate captains of their junior teams: Jay Feiwell (C), Lane Krenzen (C) Brett Edwards (A)
 
UP NEXT:
Denver will continue its road trip on Oct. 11-12 at Lake Superior State before returning to Magness Arena for its first home series of the season on Oct. 18-19 vs. Boston College.
