DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team signed Rowan Hein, Charlotte Levison, Cheyenne Forney, Mya Johanson, and Emily Counsel, head coach
Jim Turgeon announced Thursday.
"Our goal was to sign a player at each position and we were very lucky to be able to do that all at the same time during this early signing period," said Turgeon. "They are very talented, but more importantly they fit our style of play. I couldn't be more excited.
"Every single player has high character and is a good student," Turgeon added. "When you have that, it automatically sets you up in a good place to have a successful team. That is something we look for and these girls have it."
Rowan Hein | 5-10 | Guard
Fresno, California
Clovis North High School
Hein, an Adidas All-American selection, was named a two-time first-team All-League, team MVP, first team all-state, player of the game for the Valley Championship, and Best of the Best as a sophomore. The incoming freshman guard was tabbed the California State Sophomore of the Year in 2018. The Fresno native broke the school record for assists in a season as a junior. Hein has averaged 13.3 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game, and 4.5 assists per game during her high school career. She set a Clovis North single-game record with 11 assists.
Charlotte Levison | 5-11 | Guard
Atherton, California
Sacred Heart Prep
The Atherton, California native averaged 11.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest as a junior in 2018-19 on her way to being named second team all-league. The Sacred Heart Prep product was named tournament MVP during the same season. As a sophomore in 2017-18, Levison was earned league honorable mention after tallying 8.0 points per and grabbing 4.0 rebounds per contest. She was the only freshman named second-team all-league after averaging 14.0 points per game, four rebounds per game, while shooting a solid 48.0 percent from the field in 2016-17.
Cheyenne Forney | 6-3 | Forward/Center
Colton, California
Colony High School
Forney received numerous accolades as a junior in 2018-19, including All-Palomares League, All-Area First-Team, Hurrieta Valley Nighthawk Tip-Off All-Tournament Team, and All-Tournament at the 18th Annual Santa Aha Elks Classic. The Colton, California native was named the Inland Area Girls Athlete of the Week during the 2017-18 season along with being tabbed to California All-State by CaliHiSports. Forney was a force down on the low block, averaging 24.5 points and 14.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game while being named All-Mt. Baldy League during her high school career.
Mya Johanson | 6-2 | Forward
Herscher, Illinois
Herscher High School
Johanson is a two-time All-Area and All-Conference selection in 2017 and 2018. The Herscher High School product was named her high school team captain and third-team all-state in 2018. In 2019, Johanson was named her club team's captain and earned the Best Teammate Award as she helped lead her team to a second-place UAA finish.
Emily Counsel | 6-3 | Guard/Forward
Perth, Australia
Willetton Senior High School
Counsel played for the Perth Lynx as a development player in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). As a freshman, Counsel was selected to the high school state championship varsity team to play at the National Championships. During the 2019 season, she averaged 19.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. In December of 2019, Counsel will compete in the Australian School Championships. The Perth, Australia native has been selected to the Western Australian State Team each year since 2016 and started as a junior. The incoming freshman helped lead her team to a bronze medal at the 2019 U20 Nationals along with helping her club team to a state championship in 2018. Counsel averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 3.0 steals while showcasing her sharpshooting skills with a 45.0 3-point percentage in 2018.
