DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team's four game win streak was snapped in an 86-83 overtime loss to Alabama A&M on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton Gymnasium.
Senior
Madison Nelson recorded her sixth straight double-double and 18th of her career with a season-high 24 points and 13 rebounds. Following back-to-back double-double performances for the second time this season, Nelson was named to the Pioneer Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team.
Providing a spark off the bench was junior
Jasmine Jeffcoat who recorded season-highs with 17 points and nine rebounds. Senior
Lauren Loven added 14 points.
Jameica Cobb put Alabama A&M up 2-0, ending a 1:55 scoreless tie to start the game. After the two teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, Loven hit a three with 25 seconds to go to send Denver into the second quarter up 19-17.
A Deshawna Harper layup 1:12 into the second quarter tied the game at 19-19 for the Bulldogs. Loven drew a foul 10 seconds later and went 1-of-2 from the free throw line to put Denver out in front 20-19. The Pioneers took a 37-35 lead into the locker room.
DU held on to a six point lead, 51-45, going into the media timeout in the third quarter. Following three quarters of play, the Pioneers led 61-56.
The Crimson and Gold held the lead until the 6:55 mark of the fourth when Harper finished a layup to give Alabama A&M the 66-65 lead. Harper drew an and-one with 4:51 to go in the contest to extend the Bulldogs' lead to eight, their largest of the game.
Denver had a run of its own to finish regulation, going on a 9-2 run that was capped off with freshman
Meghan Boyd finding Jeffcoat in the lane who made the layup to give Denver the 76-75 lead with 1:31 to go in regulation. The Bulldogs tied the game just 37 seconds later when Harper made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. Nelson nailed both free throws to regain DU's lead with 20 seconds to go. Nigeria Jones gave the Bulldogs the lead back with just over a second to go with a jump shot in the paint. After head coach
Jim Turgeon advanced the ball with a timeout, Jeffcoat drew a foul and tied the game up from the line to send Denver to its first overtime game of the season tied at 79-79.
Nelson tied the game at 81-81 1:55 into overtime and later gave the Pioneers an 83-81 lead at the 1:52 mark. Nigeria Jones nailed a three with one minute left in the game, putting Alabama A&M up 84-83. The Bulldogs defense held off the last second attempt by Denver to go on and win 86-83.
