Game Preview: No. 7 Denver vs. Miami

The No. 7 Denver Pioneers welcome the Miami RedHawks for their first and final meeting of the season on Feb. 22-23 at Magness Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. MT on Friday and Saturday.
 
DENVER: SNAPSHOT
• The Pioneers are 4-0-3 in their last seven home games
• Denver's top five scorers have accounted for 57% of the team's total goals and 48% of the team's total points this season, however they have been held to only two goals and four assists in the last five games
• The Pioneers have been limited to 1.40 goals per game in their last five games compared to their season average of 2.96 goals per game
• Since the start of the new year, Denver is 3/44 (6.8%) on the power play, 60th in the NCAA, and 25/34 (73.5%) on the penalty kill, 50th in the NCAA. Prior to the new year, Denver went 16/75 (21.3%) on the power play, 16th in the NCAA, and 58/69 (84.1%) on the penalty kill, 17th in the NCAA
 
DENVER: LAST SERIES
UMD 5, DU 2 | DU 1, UMD 0 (Feb. 15-16, 2019)
• Ryan Barrow, Les Lancaster and Slava Demin each scored for the Pioneers
• Denver went 0/3 on the power play and 4/4 on the penalty kill. The Bulldogs outshot the Pioneers 56-38 on the weekend
• Making his first start in 10 games, Devin Cooley made 27 saves on Saturday for his third shutout of the season
 
DENVER: UP NEXT
Denver vs. Colorado College (Feb. 26, 2019)
• The Pioneers will travel to Colorado Springs to makeup the postponed game from Jan. 18
• Denver tied Colorado College 4-4 on Jan. 19 in Magness Arena
• The Pioneers have won four-consecutive Gold Pans, matching the record set by Colorado College from 1999-2002. The Pioneers lead the all-time series in the Battle for the Gold Pan, 13-12, and lead the all-time series, 178-118-20
 
MIAMI: SNAPSHOT
• The RedHawks snapped a nine-game losing streak and an 11-game winless streak on Feb. 9 vs. Omaha. Miami has not won on the road since Nov. 17 at Colorado College and is one of only five NCAA teams with two or fewer road losses
• Gordie Green leads Miami with 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points
• Miami has been tied or within a goal at some point in the third period for 12 of their last 16 games
 
MIAMI: LAST SERIES

• Miami is coming off a bye week after snapping its 9-game skid at home against the Mavericks on Feb. 9
• Gordie Green paced the RedHawks with three assists
• Miami outshot Omaha, 64-56. Matt Larkin made 51 saves on 55 shots
 
MIAMI: UP NEXT
Miami at Minnesota Duluth (March 1-2, 2019)
• The RedHawks will travel to Minnesota Duluth next weekend before closing their regular season at home against Western Michigan
 
DENVER VS. MIAMI

• The Pioneers went 2-1-1 against the RedHawks last season, going 1-0-1 in Magness Arena
• Denver is 14-11-3 all-time against Miami
• Jarid Lukosevicius and Colin Staub each have five points in 10 games against the RedHawks

WEEKLY HONORS
• Devin Cooley was named NCHC Goalie of the Week on Feb. 18 after posting a 27-save shutout on Feb. 16 against Minnesota Duluth. The shutout marked Cooley's third of the season and came in his first start since Jan. 4, capping a nine-game span without playing
 
NCAA LEADERS
• Devin Cooley is 3rd in the NCAA with a .934 save percentage and 8th in the NCAA with a 1.93 GAA
• Jarid Lukosevicius is T-5th in the NCAA with five game-winning goals
 
EXTENDING THE STREAK
• Denver is four wins shy of its 18th consecutive 20-win season. The last time the Pioneers missed the 20-game threshold was 2001-02 when the team finished 19-15-4 under George Gwozdecky
 
HOT AT HOME
• Denver is 9-1-4 at home, one of only four teams in the NCAA with one or fewer home losses
• The Pioneers have three home games remaining on their schedule (Feb. 22-23 vs Miami, March 8 vs. Colorado College)
 
ACADEMIC HONORS
• Denver had 14 student-athletes named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference team and nine student-athletes named NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, second-most in the conference
• To be eligible for the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team, a student-athlete must compile a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher while having completed at least one academic year at his institution. Student-athletes who have accrued a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher are honored as NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, in addition to Academic All-Conference. Qualified freshmen will be added to the lists at the conclusion of the school year
 
LUKO LEADS THE WAY
• Denver is 7-0-2 when Lukosevicius scores and 9-6-2 when he doesn't
• Jarid Lukosevicius has the all-time school record and is the NCAA active leader in career game-winning goals with 18. The all-time career leader is Austin Ortega (Omaha '14-'17 - 23)
 
FRESH FACES
• Denver's freshmen class is 3rd in NCAA scoring with 86 points (30-56-86), trailing Niagara (100) and Quinnipiac (100)
• The Pioneers' freshmen class accounts for 39% of the of the team's total points and 37% of the team's total goals
• Emilio Pettersen is T-7th among NCAA freshman with 23 points
• Cole Guttman is T-8th among NCAA freshmen with 10 goals
• Slava Demin is T-4th among NCAA freshmen with a +17 plus/minus rating
 
WORKING OVERTIME
• The Pioneers have played nine overtime games this season, T-2nd-most in the NCAA. Denver is 4-1-4 in the extra period with the most overtime wins in the NCAA
 
MILLER HOCKEY COMPLEX
• The new home of Denver hockey is named after University of Denver's Board of Trustees member John A. Miller, his wife, Sandy, and their family
• The 4,464 square foot space houses the Pioneers' lockers, lounge, sauna, kitchen, training room and equipment room
• More than 150 donors contributed to the $2.5 million renovation
 
YOUNG PIONEERS
• At 29, David Carle is the youngest coach in Division I college hockey
• The Pioneers have the fourth-youngest team in college hockey with an average age of 20 years/8 months
• The Pioneers have 19 freshmen and sophomores, the most since the 2007-08 season when Tyler Bozak was a freshman
 
EXPERIENCED STAFF
• Assistant Coach Tavis MacMillan served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2004-07
• Assistant Coach Dallas Ferguson served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2008-17
• Volunteer Assistant Coach Steven Reinprecht played 663 NHL games over 11 NHL seasons, winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001
• Team Manager Ben Scrivens played 144 NHL games over five NHL seasons in addition to representing Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics
