DENVER – The No. 7 Denver Pioneers (17-8-4, 9-8-2-2) scored four third-period goals to defeat the Miami RedHawks (11-17-4, 5-13-2-1) 5-2 on Saturday in Magness Arena.
Jack Doremus led the third-period barrage with two goals separated by only 17 seconds, making it 3-1 at 5:34 the frame. The two-goal cushion was enough to push Denver to its 10th home win of the season. The Pioneers outshot the RedHawks, 43-17.
"It was a good response from our group," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle said. "I think we stuck with our game plan. I thought Ryan Larkin had another great night in net and their commitment to defense and blocking shots was really good. It was not easy for us to generate offense tonight. I'm really proud of our guys for sticking with it and being able to capitalize on some chances in the third to pull away."
Denver took an early lead, scoring at 3:31 of the first period to take the lead for the first time in the weekend. Kohen Olischefski started the play with an offensive zone faceoff win before Ian Mitchell and Emilio Pettersen worked the puck to Jarid Lukosevicius for a one-timer from the right circle.
The Pioneers' 1-0 lead held until 14:43 of the second period when Josh Melnick and Brian Hawkinson broke away on a shorthanded two-on-one rush. Melnick's shot rose above the left shoulder of Filip Larsson, tying the game 1-1 ahead of the second intermission.
Doremus put Denver back in front at 5:17 of the third, standing in front of the net and deflecting Griffin Mendel's shot past Ryan Larkin for his first goal of the season. Only 17 seconds later, Tyson McLellan pushed a pass up the left-wing boards for Doremus who fired a wrist shot over the glove of Larkin. Lukosevicius extended the lead on the power play at 12:14 as he tipped Liam Finlay's pass into the high slot past Larkin for his second goal of the night and 100th career point. Colin Staub sealed the win with an empty netter.
Mitchell finished with a pair of assists, Finlay had three assists and Filip Larsson made 15 saves in the win.
Denver went 1/3 on the power play and 1/1 on the penalty kill.
