Denver uses three goals in the third period in series opener
DENVER – The No. 4 University of Denver hockey team opened its weekend series against the No. 18 Boston College Eagles on Friday night with a 5-2 victory at Magness Arena.
Â
Freshman defenseman Daxon Rudolph scored on the power play 29 seconds into the third period to break a 2-2 tie, and the Pioneers tallied two more times in the frame to earn their fifth straight victory against the Eagles dating back to 2023.
Â
Denver (3-2-0) and Boston College (1-3-0) wrap up their two-game, non-conference series on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast on NCHC.tv and televised regionally on Altitude 2. Limited tickets are still available.
Â
Denver senior captain Kieran Cebrian scored twice, and junior James Reeder had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Clarke Caswell and freshman Jack Pridham had multiple points as well with a pair of helpers apiece, and senior Sam Harris also tallied by opening the scoring with 2:55 remaining in the first period.
Â
Junior goaltender Tyler Krivtsov made his fourth straight start in net and stopped 26-of-28 shots faced to earn his first victory on home ice. He is in his first season at Denver after spending the previous two years with Alaska Anchorage.
Â
The Pioneers led 2-0 just 2:06 into the middle period after Cebrian scored on a breakaway, but BC quickly responded with markers from Dean Letourneau and Will Vote in a matter of 37 seconds to knot the contest with 8:45 remaining in the stanza.
Â
A late cross-checking penalty by Letourneau at the end of the second proved costly for BC, as DU took advantage of the ensuing power play to start the third. Rudolph received a pass from Caswell along the left wall and fired a wrist shot from the point that got through traffic and beat BC netminder Louka Cloutier, a Colorado Avalanche prospect.
Â
Cloutier made 27 saves in the loss.
Â
Reeder doubled Denver's lead at 7:26, and Cebrian netted his second of the evening into an empty net in the last minute to pick up his first career multi-goal game.
Â
The Pioneers finished 1-for-5 on the power play and were perfect on the penalty kill, going 2-for-2.
Â
UP NEXT: DU is halfway through its season-long, six-game homestand. After wrapping up the two-game series on Saturday against Boston College, the Pioneers will begin NCHC play next weekend versus Omaha on Oct. 30-31.

QUOTABLES
Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle
On the third period: "Yeah, I really liked our first and third. Give them credit, they pushed in the second there, especially after [us] getting out there 2-0. They had a couple good back-to-back shifts, and they put two in the back of our net, but the resiliency of our group—huge goal for our power play, biggest goal they've scored yet on the year. I thought it gave our bench a lot of confidence to continue to push in the third."
Â
On goaltender Tyler Krivtsov's performance: "I thought he was excellent, they (Boston College) made life hard on us defensively, and they've got a really dynamic forward group. TK was wonderful tonight. His best game of the year, certainly, to date and [we] wouldn't have won the game without him."
Â
Junior Goaltender Tyler Krivtsov
On if his routine has changed as a starter: "Nothing changed. I treat every day as the same process. Just try to work every day and stick to the process."
Â
On his first home win at DU: "It's fun to win in front of the fans, so hopefully this will keep it going for tomorrow."
Â
On assessing his own performance in the game: "I thought it was pretty solid. We kind of got away from it a little bit in the second, but Boston's a good offensive team. They play fast, they play hard, so kudos to them. It will be a tough game tomorrow, but I was happy with how we played today."
