DENVER – University of Denver gymnastics freshman
Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) was named the Big 12 Conference co-Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Ruiz set or tied four career highs during Saturday's all-Big 12 meet at West Virginia including in the all-around (39.425). She matched her personal best on beam (9.825) while setting new career highs on vault (9.825) and floor (9.925). Her floor performance earned her a share of the event title, and she tied for second overall in the all-around.
All four of Ruiz's scores contributed to Denver's 197.450 performance, which was the program's highest-ever road score and third-highest overall.
Sharing the Newcomer of the Week honor this week with Ruiz is Oklahoma's Karrie Thomas.
This is the first-career Big 12 weekly award of Ruiz's career, and it is the third award for a DU gymnast this season. Sophomore
Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) earned Gymnast of the Week honors for Week 2, and freshman
Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) was Newcomer of the Week last week.
