Missura Tied for Lead as DU Makes Statement on Moving Day

Pioneers post lowest team round since spring of 2015
BANDON, Ore. – Behind a stellar performance from redshirt freshman Esteban Missura, the University of Denver golf team was the team to watch on Moving Day at the Bandon Dunes Championship. The Pioneers fired a season-best 9-under 279 as they jumped to third through two rounds of action.
DU's 9-under 279 was the lowest round of the day in the 17-team field, and was also the lowest by the team since the spring of 2015 when they posted a second-round total of 271 in the Desert Shootout.
Par at the 6,954-yard Bandon Dunes Course was 72.
The terrific day on the course pulled the Crimson and Gold to within four strokes of overall leader Ohio State, who leads with a team total of 1-under.
Missura's career day on the course, his 5-under 67 a new career low, pulled him into a tie atop the individual leaderboard with Utah's Blake Tomlinson.
"Overall, I felt great today," Missura said. "I hit the ball very well but my putting made the difference. I stayed positive all day and trusted my game which definitely helped me go low today."
On the day, Missura was just a prime example of being consistent, recording only one bogey for the round while tallying up six birdies including coming on strong on the back nine for a second straight day, this time firing 3-under.
Missura was one of four Pioneer players were posted 1-under or lower on the afternoon, a first this year for young roster that has no seniors on it.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Cal McCoy, John Sand, Roy Kang, Eric Hagen and Missura.
"Best round of the season and it was fun to watch," Billinger said. "The guys stay composed and played awesome. One more day to stay focused as tonight a storm is coming in tomorrow will be a test of resiliency. I'm just extremely proud of the guys and hats off to Esteban as his round today was incredible."
McCoy got himself going on day two with a seven-stroke improvement, resulting in a 2-under 70 for the round, moving him into a tie for 23rd.
Sand made noise on the leaderboard, rising 15 spots into a tie for 30th with a 1-under 70 in his second round on Monday.
Kang and Hagen each sit tied for 67th through 36 holes at 9-over.
Final round of the tournament is set for Tuesday.
