INDIANAPOLIS – University of Denver men's swimming sophomore
Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y) has qualified for the 2019 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. This year's NCAA Championships will take place March 27-30 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
"With only 235 student-athletes qualifying for this elite event, we are excited to be represented at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships," head coach
Brian Schrader said. "Cam will be one of the youngest men in the field, even as a sophomore, and he gets better every time he races at this level. He has been pointed at this event since helping our relay earn All-America status at this event last year, and we are just pointed toward getting faster and seeing where that takes him."
Auchinachie will swim in the 50 free (13
th seed/19.22), 100 free (37
th/42.65) and 200 free (51
st/1:35.56) at this year's Championships. A year ago, Auchinachie was a part of the first DI All-America relay in program history (200 free), as the quartet broke the school record in the event to finish 14
th in the country. He was also a part of the school-record in the 400 free at the national meet.
Auchinachie earned 2019 All-Summit League honors in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay, taking the top spot in five of those six events in the Summit League Championships. At this year's Championships, Auchinachie snapped the 50 free record twice and broke the 100 free record as well.
Throughout the course of the season, Auchinachie earned five wins in the 50 free, three in the 100 free, one in the 200 free, four in the 200 free relay, four in the 400 free relay, one in the 800 free relay, five in the 200 medley relay and three in the 400 medley relay.
While the rest of the team returned home from the 2019 Tennessee Invitational this fall, Auchinachie stayed back with a couple of other teammates, and earned an Olympic Trial Standard in the 50 free.
