Four Pioneers Earn Regular Season All-American Honors

DU gymnasts combine for 10 awards across all five individual events

DENVER – Four University of Denver gymnasts earned regular season All-American honors, the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association announced on Tuesday. Junior Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.), sophomore Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.), freshman Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) and senior Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.) combined for 10 total awards.

Karr captured four honors for the second year in a row, taking home first-team honors in the all-around and on vault after finishing the season ranked No. 4 in the nation on both. Her all-around NQS of 39.665 is the highest in DU history.

The junior added second-team honors on bars and on beam with her 9.940 bars NQS becoming a new program record. She now owns a combined 13 All-American honors: 10 regular season and three postseason.

Brown earned All-American status for the first time in her career, landing first-team nods in the all-around and on floor, and second-team on vault and bars. Her all-around NQS of 39.615 is the third-highest in program history, and her 9.960 on floor is the program's second-highest mark. She joins Karr and Nina McGee as the only Pioneers to finish with four regular season All-American honors in the same season.

Vasquez finished No. 6 in the nation on beam, winning first-team All-American honors on the event. It is the first time a DU freshman notched All-American status on beam, and her NQS of 9.935 is a new program record.

Schou landed an All-American award on beam for the second year in a row, joining Vasquez with first-team honors. The senior tied for No. 8 in the nation with an NQS of 9.925, which is the third-highest in DU history.

Regular season All-American honors are awarded based on the final National Qualifying Scores (NQS) ahead of NCAA Regional competition. Student-athletes who are ranked No. 1-8 (including ties) earn first-team status while those ranked No. 9-16 (including ties) earn second-team status.

This is the first time in DU history that more than two Pioneers earned regular season All-American nods in the same season. Denver had two regular season All-Americans in each of the last two years.

Postseason All-American honors are awarded following semifinal competition at the NCAA National Championships, set for April 19-20 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The No. 5-ranked University of Denver gymnastics team, presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, will compete in the second round of NCAA Regionals on April 5 in Corvallis, Ore. Joining Denver in the afternoon session will be No. 12 Boise State, No. 18 Washington and No. 24 Southern Utah.
