Box Score Fargo, N.D. –
Filip Larsson made 24 saves as the No. 6 Denver Pioneers blanked the No. 9 Ohio State Buckeyes 1-0 in the West Regional Semifinal on Friday at Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D. Denver will No. 18 American International College in the West Regional Final for a spot in the 2019 Frozen Four in Buffalo, N.Y.
"I thought it was a really tightly-contested game," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle said. "There was not a lot of open ice for either team. I liked how we defended as the game went on after the first period. I thought we were great in the second and third period taking away time and space, being above pucks and limiting second-chance opportunities.
Filip Larsson was a stud in net in the first period when he needed to be."
Larsson kickstarted his third shutout of the season with a 12-save first period, blanking Ohio State on a pair of power plays and a breakaway chance with close to three minutes remaining in the frame.
Dakota Joshua tested Larsson again in the opening minute of the second period, but the theme from the first period held consistent. Goaltending and defense kept the game scoreless. The Pioneers broke the tie at 19:20 of the frame as
Emilio Pettersen sent a saucer pass to
Les Lancaster who entered the zone on the right-wing side and fired a shot past Tommy Nappier.
Larsson's play maintained the one-goal lead until
Colin Staub iced the game with an empty netter at 19:02 of the third period.
Michael Davies assisted on the goal for his second helper of the night.
Denver went 0/3 on the power play and 4/4 on the penalty kill.
