Hagen Starts Strong as Pios 3rd through Round 1 of Summit League Championship

Junior tied for fourth through 18 holes
NEWTON, Kan. – The University of Denver golf team put itself right in contention on day one of the Summit League Championship on Sunday. The Pioneers finished third after posting a team score of 292, 4-over-par.
Par for the 6,931-yard course was 72 at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
DU is right in the hunt, just two shots back of Oral Roberts and South Dakota State at 2-under.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Cal McCoy, Esteban Missura, John Sand, Eric Hagen and Carson Griggs.
Hagen got the start he was looking for on the individual side, tying a season low with a 71 on day one to put him in a tie for fourth. The Aberdeen, Wash. native took advantage of pin placement on the afternoon, recording five birdies in his 18 holes of play.
"Great fight and heart by the guys today," Billinger said. "The wind blew about 20 mph steady today and it requited a lot of patience since the wind direction was opposite from the practice round. Eric played great today and everyone contributed.
"The league announced that tomorrow will be 36 holes due to a potential storm coming in on Tuesday. Tomorrow the wind supposed to be around 20-30 mph and it will be a great battle to determine a champion."
Griggs delivered in his first round of postseason golf, tying for seventh with a 1-over performance on the course. The freshman really found his groove on the back nine, going 2-under during the final nine-hole stretch.
McCoy and Missura each closed out the round tied for 13th after posting a pair of 74s (2-over) on the afternoon.
Sand is tied for 27th at 5-over.
Rounds two and three are set for Monday.
