Men's Soccer Alumni Q+A: Doug Callahan ('77)

Where are you originally from?
 Wheaton, Ill.

Why did you choose to attend DU?
Strong reputation of the business school, soccer and the great skiing.

Where are you now/what are you doing?
Professor and Director of the Graduate Sport Management Program at Winona State University in Winona, Minn.

Last time you touched a soccer ball/where?
Playing with kids at an orphanage in Lima, Peru.

Highlight/favorite soccer memory from your time at DU:
Playing in front of family and friends and against some former high school teammates at the Wheaton College Invitational involving Northern Illinois University and Indiana University. We did not win the tourney but we made a strong showing.

When is the last time you were back on campus?
Spring Break in March, 2017, after skiing in Steamboat. I don't get back as often as I would like.

Favorite non-soccer memory from your time at DU:
Winter Carnival every January.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Going on more short-term mission trips to help the less fortunate. Retired and doing more golf, skiing, fishing and travelling with my lovely wife Sarah (Menninger '79 Grad) of 50+ years. Hopefully we will be near our children and grandchildren so we can spend more time with them. Finally, come back to Colorado more and catch some DU soccer games.

What is your greatest accomplishment?
Back in the early 90's I started from scratch both a men's and women's soccer team along with a men's golf team at Union College in KY. I coached all three along with a ½ teaching load for a number of years. All of the programs are still going strong.

What advice do you have for the current Pioneers about life after college?
Follow the career path that provides the best opportunity to utilize your gifts and talents. That way, you can enjoy your work and have a sense of purpose. Life is too short to be working at something you do not have your heart in.
