Pioneers Primed for 2019 NHL Draft

DENVER – The Denver Pioneers men's hockey team will look to extend its 17-year streak of having a student-athlete selected in the NHL Draft on June 21 & 22 in Vancouver, B.C.

Denver had three student-athletes selected in the 2018 NHL Draft: Slava Demin (Vegas Golden Knights), Emilio Pettersen (Calgary Flames) and Brett Stapley (Montreal Canadiens). The trio joins Ian Mitchell (Chicago Blackhawks), Cole Guttman (Tampa Bay Lightning) and incoming freshman Magnus Chrona (Tampa Bay Lightning) as drafted players slated to skate for the Pioneers next season.

Incoming freshman Bobby Brink has received the most recognition among Denver's draft-eligible prospects, being projected as a first-round pick on TSN's draft list and ranking 19th among North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting Final Rankings. Brink had 35 goals, 33 assists and a +23 rating in 43 games for the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers last season. The Minnetonka, Minn. native was named USHL Forward of the Year after averaging 1.29 points per game to rank 14th overall in USHL history. Brink's 35 goals tied a Sioux City franchise record and came in a season wherein he missed 19 games. Internationally, Brink represented the U.S. at the 2018 World Junior "A" Challenge and 2019 U-18 World Championship, winning a gold medal and tournament MVP in the former and helping the Americans to a bronze medal in the latter. He was recently named to the U.S. roster for the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase.

Since 1966, the Pioneers have had 112 picks in the NHL Draft, including four first-round selections: Henrik Borgstrom (2016), Beau Bennett (2010), Joe Colborne (2008) and Craig Redmond (1984). Thirteen Denver alumni played in the NHL during the 2018-19 season, culminating with Tyler Bozak and Chris Butler lifting the 2019 Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues.

The first round of the 2019 NHL Draft is set for Friday, June 21 at 6 p.m. MT. Rounds 2-7 will begin on Saturday, June 22 at 11 a.m. MT.
