Summer Swim Update: Sanes Shines at Worlds; Six Pios Headed to US Nats

DENVER – Members of the University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs have been in the water this month, and six members of the program will head to US Nationals this week.
 
Junior Adriel Sanes (Rosharon, Texas) finished 53rd in the 100 breast at the 18th FINA World Championships earlier this month, setting a DU long course record with his 1:02.91. Later in the week, Sanes finished 44th in the 200 breast with a 2:17.57. Sophomore Patrick Groters (Santa Cruz, Aruba) also swam at the World Championships in Gwangju, Korea, taking 41st in the 200 back (2:10.25) and 48th in the 200 IM (48th).
 
Senior Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) highlighted the Pioneers Speedo Champions Series sections in Gresham, Oregon last week. Sykes won both the prelims and the finals in the 100 free with a 51.22 in the finals to reach the top of the podium. Sykes also swam in the finals of the 50 free and 200 free.
 
On Wednesday, six swimmers will head to California for the 2019 Phillips 66 National Championships. All-American Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y.) will swim in the 100 free (21st seed/49.63), 200 free (98th/1:34.24) and the 50 free (28th/22.73).
 
Assistant coach and former Pioneer swimmer Kyle Robrock will take part in the 50 free, 100 fly and 100 back, and is seeded 14th in the 50 free with his seed time of 22.53.
 
Senior Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) will take part in the opening event of the meet, checking in at 76th in the seeding for the 200 fly. Valette will also swim in the 100 fly (43rd/1:00.00). Junior Cy Jager (Moscow, Idaho) is set to swim in the 100 breast (80th/53.34) and fifth-year senior Graham Walker (Nairobi, Kenya) qualified for the event in the 100 fly (72nd/54.42).
 
Senior Robin Kuebler (Centennial, Colo.) won't swim in any individual events, but will swim in freestyle relays at the meet.
