Denver Takes Fifth at Ram Masters Invitational

Hagen fires career-low 67 on the day
FORT COLLINS – The University of Denver men's golf team earned its first top-five finish of the season on Tuesday at the Ram Masters Invitational. The Pioneers posted a 286 (6-over) team score in the final round to finish with a 54-hole score of 853 (13-over) en route to a fifth-place finish at the par-70 Fort Collins Country Club.
Colorado State claimed the team title on its home course for a sixth straight year with a three-round total of 831 (9-under); followed by CSU-Fullerton 15 strokes back, Wyoming, and Texas El-Paso to round out the top four.
Denver finished first in the 15-team field with 186 pars and three eagles, while finishing third in par-four scoring with a 4.13 (18-over).
"The guys grinded today and I am proud of them," head coach Erik Billinger said. "Cal had another top-10 finish with rounds of 71, 68, 70 and Hagen came back with a great 67 today. Finishing fifth out of 17 teams is a solid start to the season but I also know we can do better.
"We just threw away too many shots yesterday afternoon and some today, so we have to clean up our little mistakes. We are excited to head to Dallas on Friday and continue to compete."
Leading the charge for the Pioneers in the final round was Eric Hagen, firing three birdies and an eagle to finish 5-under on the front nine. The senior finished the day 3-under (67) to move up 35 spots on the individual leaderboard with a 214 (4-over) and a 22nd-place finish.
Cal McCoy opened his sophomore campaign with his fifth top-10 career finish, tying for eighth. The Highlands Ranch native carded two birdies in Tuesday's final round to finish with an even-par 70. McCoy closed the tournament with a 1-under performance after 54 holes of play.
Esteban Missura finished atop the 96-players with 43 pars after three rounds of action. Missura carded an 18-hole score of 73 (3-over) in the third round, finishing with a score of 215 (5-over) and tying for 28th overall.
Carson Griggs wrapped up his first tournament of the year tied for 53rd with a 54-hole score of 219 (9-over), while Jackson Solem posted a 221 (11-over) to finish tied for 57th during his three rounds at the event.
John Sand and Jun Ho Won competed as individuals. After finishing 1-over par in the first two rounds, Sand carded an eagle in the final round to finish with a 72 (2-over), tying for 22nd with a score of 4-over par (214). Ho Won tied for 36th with 54-hole total of 216 (4-over).
The Crimson and Gold return to action Sept. 22-24 in Dallas, Texas for the SMU Invitational.
