Missura shoots a 72 in opening round
DALLAS – The University of Denver men's golf team tied for ninth place after the first day of the SMU Invitational on Sunday. The Pioneers posted a first-round team score of 291 (7-over) at the par-71, 7,486-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club.
The Crimson Gold are tied with No. 24 Sam Houston State and Kansas State, and just four strokes behind No. 20 Ball State.
"We had a great round going, we just didn't finish," said head coach Erik Billinger. "The finishing holes hurt us and the wind was challenging the entire round with us teeing off late.
"I told the guys to learn from it and come out with some determination and attitude tomorrow. We need to stay focused and keep fighting. Everyone is playing solid, tomorrow is a new day and new opportunity for us to show how we can play."
Host SMU and third-ranked Arizona State lead the 16-team field with an 18-hole score of 279 (5-under). UC Davis, Little Rock, and Houston round out the top five.
Esteban Missura paced the Pioneers through the first round, finishing 1-over par (72). The sophomore finished even on the front nine with three birdies, while adding one on the back nine.
Three Denver golfers – Cal McCoy, Carson Griggs, and Jun Ho Won -- finished tied for 37th after 18-holes with a score of 73 (2-over). The trio combined for nine birdies with each golfer recording three.
Senior Eric Hagen heads into round two tied for 51st with a first round score of 3-over par (74).
Action at the SMU Invitational continues tomorrow at 7 a.m. (MT).
