Pioneers climb five spots on last day of play
DALLAS – The University of Denver men's golf team recorded its best round of the SMU Invitational on Tuesday with a final round team score of 281 (3-under) at the par-71, 7,486 yard Trinity Forest Golf Club.
The Pioneers moved up five spots on the team leaderboard in the third round to finish tied for ninth place with UTSA with a 54-hole team score of 859 (7-over).
The Crimson and Gold finished a stroke ahead of No. 20 Ball State and No. 24 Sam Houston State, picking up head-to-head wins.
Third-ranked Arizona State claimed the team title with a 30-under par performance (822); followed by host SMU, Houston, Rice and Little Rock.
"Our back nine was incredible," head coach Erik Billinger said. "Cal shot 5-under with a hole out for eagle. Eric [Hagen] birdied his last four holes, and Esteban was fantastic coming down the stretch as well.
"We beat some really good teams this week in conditions that we are not normally playing, with burmuda grass. Overall, just proud of them for the comeback today as we never quit."
Cal McCoy fired up 17 spots on the individual leaderboard with his best round of the invitational, firing a 3-under-par (68) in Tuesday's final round. The Highlands Ranch native finished 5-under on the front nine with the help of an eagle and three birdies in as many holes. McCoy finished tied for 17th with a 54-hole score of 211 (2-under).
In the Tuesday's final round, Esteban Missura recorded a 1-under par to jump 13 spots on the individual leaderboard. The sophomore carded five birdies to finish with a three-round score of 215 (2-over) to tie 41st.
Two Pioneers – Carson Griggs and Jun Ho Won – tied for 60th with a score of 6-over par (219). Senior Eric Hagen finished with a total of 223 (10-over) to tie for 76th.
Billinger's squad returns to action Oct. 4-6 to host the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at the University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch.
