PORTLAND – The [RV/-] University of Denver women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2019 campaign, a 1-0 setback to Washington on Thursday night at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland.
"It's always tough when you lose, especially your first road match, on an own goal," head coach
Jeff Hooker said. "I thought we could've mustered up additional chances in the second half, but we just didn't adjust quickly enough after halftime. With that said, I'm proud how we pushed them all the way to the end, and we did create a couple quality chances that we just couldn't get on the end of. I didn't think we gave them a lot of opportunities. I thought Brittany and the back four made some good decisions and executed well throughout the match."
Washington got on the board in the 42
nd minute on an own goal, Denver's first goal conceded in the first 422 minutes of the campaign.
Ameera Hussen played a dangerous corner in the box for the Huskies to start the scoring opportunity, a service headed into the six-yard box by Olivia Van Der Jagt and back-heeled towards the goal by Kennedy Smith. Redshirt-senior
Mary DeWalt (West Bend, Wis.) was able to get in-front of the back-heeled effort, but her attempted clearance from the goal line couldn't beat the post and nestled into the side netting.
On the other side of halftime, senior
Hannah Adler (Oak Park, Calif.) had the best chance to equalize for the Pioneers in the 80
th minute, making a well-timed run to the back-post, but the Denver captain had the
Hannah Gallegos (Los Ranchos, N.M.) cross bounce off the turf and up her shin, glancing wide of the net.
Denver controlled most of the play in the second 45 minutes, outshooting the Huskies 4-2, and taking the only two corner kicks in the half. The Pioneers had 62 percent possession in the match, of which 52% of that was in their attacking half.
