Box Score DENVER – With six goals on a season-high 48 shots, the No. 5 Denver Pioneers hockey team (14-4-3, 4-3-2-1) defeated the St. Cloud State Huskies 6-3 to extend its winning streak to five games on Friday at Magness Arena.
Â
Three third-period goals allowed Denver to separate itself and transform a 3-2 lead at the second intermission into its fourth six-goal game of the season.
Â
"Our effort overall was really good tonight," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle said. "There weren't a lot of dips in our game. I thought our puck pressure was there all night long and we put some in the back of the net. Overall, it was a really good night executing with and without the puck."
Â
Hank Crone and
Ian Mitchell paced the Pioneers with Crone scoring twice and Mitchell posting three points, including a coast-to-coast shorthanded goal that boosted Denver's lead to 4-2 at 7:16 of the third.
Â
With goals at 9:59 and 19:04 of the first period, the Pioneers positioned themselves for success with a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Mitchell's shot toward the net was the catalyst for the opening goal with
Brett Edwards collecting the rebound and finding Crone for a tap-in. Denver extended its lead in the final minute of the period with
Slava Demin catching a pass from
Cole Guttman as he entered the zone, sliding past his defenseman and finding
Kohen Olischefski open at the net front.
Â
The penalty-free first period gave way to a special teams exhibition in the second. The Huskies cut their deficit to 2-1 at 3:30 with Jack Poehling's goal,
Ryan Barrow re-established Denver's lead with a goal halfway through the period, then the Easton Brodzinski scored again for St. Cloud State to make it a 3-2 game after 40 minutes. All goals were scored on the power play.
Â
Denver's three-goal third period began with Mitchell's tally, continued with Crone's rebound goal on a five-on-three power play and concluded with
Brett Stapley's empty netter. The Pioneers' offense rendered the Huskies final goal inconsequential.
