Game Preview: No. 5 Denver vs. St. Cloud State Pres. By Evans Case, LLP

Following a 6-3 victory against St. Cloud State on Friday, the No. 5 Denver Pioneers hockey team (14-4-3, 4-3-2-1) takes its five-game winning streak into Saturday's matchup with the Huskies. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. MT at Magness Arena.
 
DENVER: LAST GAME
DU 6, SCSU 3 (Magness Arena, Denver, Colo. - Jan. 10, 2020)
• Denver extended its winning streak to five games, outshooting St. Cloud State 48-26 and scoring three third-period goals to transform a 3-2 lead at the second intermission into its fourth six-goal game of the season
• The Pioneers went 2/3 on the power play and 1/3 on the penalty kill
• Denver's 48 shots tied a season-high. The last time the Pioneers fired 48 shots was on Nov. 1 vs. Niagara (6-2 W)
• Ian Mitchell (1-2-3), Hank Crone (2-0-2), Ryan Barrow (1-1-2), Brett Stapley (1-1-2) and Liam Finlay (0-2-2) had multi-point games. Magnus Chrona made 23 saves
 
DENVER: SNAPSHOT
• The Pioneers are on a five-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 20-9 in that stretch while going 6/18 (33.3%) on the power play and 18/21 (85.7%) on the penalty kill. Prior to the streak, Denver was 1-4-3 in eight games. The Pioneers started the year on an eight-game winning streak from Oct. 5 - Nov. 2
• Denver ranks 2nd in the NCAA in shots on goal per game (35.71). The Pioneers have outshot their opponent in 18 of their 21 games this season and are 13-3-2 in those games. Denver has outshot its opponent in nine of its last 10 games and has outshot its opponent by double digits on eight occasions
• The Pioneers' penalty kill is T-6th in the NCAA, going 73/82 (89.0%). Denver has scored four shorthanded goals, T-5th in the NCAA
 
DENVER: UP NEXT
Jan. 17-18 at Omaha (Baxter Arena - Omaha, Neb.)
• Denver will travel to Omaha for its lone series of the season against the Mavericks 
• The Pioneers are 30-9-3 all-time against Omaha, going 3-0-1 last season and having not lost a game to the Mavericks in 16 meetings. Denver's last loss to Omaha was on Jan. 10, 2015 at Baxter Arena
• The Mavericks defeated No. 1 North Dakota 6-3 on Friday, snapping the Fighting Hawks' 15-game unbeaten streak
 
ST. CLOUD STATE: SNAPSHOT
• Through a combination of graduation and early departures, St. Cloud State lost five of its top six scorers from 2018-19 when the team finished 30-6-3 (19-2-3-2)
• The Huskies have lost three of their last four games, their lone victory coming against then-No. 2 Minnesota State on Dec. 28 (7-2 W)
• Sam Hentges (injured) leads St. Cloud State with 22 points (7-15-22) in 18 games. He did not make the road trip with the Huskies
• St. Cloud State has struggled playing from behind. The Huskies are 1-7-0 when trailing after the first period, 0-7-2 when trailing after the second and 1-8-1 when allowing the first goal of the game
 
ST. CLOUD STATE: UP NEXT
Jan. 17-18 vs. Minnesota Duluth (Herb Brooks National Hockey Center - St. Cloud, Minn.)
• St. Cloud State is 15-13-1 all-time against Minnesota Duluth and went 3-2-0 last season with a 2-0-0 mark at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center
• Minnesota Duluth defeated Western Michigan 6-3 on Friday
 
DENVER VS. ST. CLOUD STATE
• Denver leads the all-time series 51-46-6 and went 0-2-0 against the Huskies last season with a pair of 4-3 losses
• Liam Finlay leads Pioneer skaters with 10 points (5-5-10) in 12 career games against St. Cloud State
 
HOT STREAKS
• Cole Guttman is on a six-game point streak with six goals and three assists…Bobby Brink is on a four-game point streak with two goals and two assists...Ian Mitchell is on a three-game point streak with one goal and four assists...
• Brett Stapley has one goal and four assists in his last four games...Emilio Pettersen has two goals and five assists in his last six games...
 
DEMIN NAMED NCHC DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK
• Slava Demin was named NCHC Defenseman of the Week on Jan. 6 after recording one goal and two assists vs. UMass on Jan. 3-4
• Demin had one goal and two assists in the Pioneers' 4-2 victory on Jan. 3, scoring Denver's first goal of the game and assisting on the game-tying and insurance goals
 
STAT LEADERS
• Magnus Chrona has a 2.23 GAA, 2nd among NCAA freshmen, a .918 SV%, 4th among NCAA freshmen, and two shutouts, 2nd among NCAA freshmen
• Bobby Brink has eight goals, T-3rd among NCAA freshmen, and 57 shots, 5th among NCAA freshmen
• Cole Guttman is T-1st in the NCAA with five game-winning goals
• Ian Mitchell is T-10th among NCAA defensemen with 17 points (4-13-17)
 
SCORING STATS
• Denver is 11-0-1 when leading and 2-0-1 when tied after the second period
• The Pioneers have a +26 overall goal margin, T-9th in the NCAA, as well as a +32 margin in the second and third periods, 2nd in the NCAA
 
GUTT CHECK
• Cole Guttman is on a six-game point streak with six goals and three assists. Prior to his streak, the Tampa Bay Lightning prospect had three goals and three assists through 14 games
• This season, Denver is 9-0-2 when Guttman scores a point and 7-0-1 when he scores a goal
 
SUPER SOPHOMORES
• Denver's sophomore class ranks 2nd in the NCAA in scoring with 80 points (27-53-80) and accounts for 41% of the Pioneers' point production
 
MITCHELL'S POINT
• Since last season, Denver is 23-2-4 when Ian Mitchell scores a point and 15-14-4 when he does not
• This season, the Pioneers are 11-0-0 when Ian Mitchell scores a point and 3-4-3 when he does not
 
EXTENDING THE STREAK
• On March 15, 2019, the Pioneers became only the third team in NCAA history to compile 18-consecutive 20-win seasons. The last time Denver missed the 20-game mark was 2000-01 when the team went 19-15-4
• The Pioneers' streak of 18 straight 20-win seasons is the longest active streak in the NCAA. The NCAA record for consecutive 20-win seasons is held by Michigan, which had 25 from 1987-2012
 
HOME COOKIN'
• Denver is 34-10-8 at home since the 2017-18 season, posting a .654 winning percentage and taking points from 81% of its games
 
GWOZDECKY INDUCTED TO DENVER ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
• Former head coach Goerge Gwozdecky was named among 12 inductees for the 2020 Denver Athletic Hall of Fame class to be honored on campus May 16, 2020
• Gwozdecky posted a 443-267-64 record with the Pioneers from 1994-2013, winning back-to-back National Championships in 2004 & 2005, three WCHA regular-season titles, four WCHA playoff titles and posting 16 20-win seasons. He received the Spencer Penrose Award as National Coach of the Year in 2005
 
MITCHELL & WIERCIOCH WIN SPENGLER CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
• Ian Mitchell and alum Patrick Wiercioch won Canada's 16th Spengler Cup Championship on Dec. 31. Mitchell finished the tournament with one goal and two assists in four games as the youngest player on the roster
 
NON-CONFERENCE STREAK
• Prior to Dec. 6 at Arizona State, the Pioneers were undefeated in 19 straight non-conference games with a 17-0-2 mark in that stretch
• Denver is 24-3-5 against non-conference opponents since the 2017-18 season
 
70TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
• The Pioneers are playing in their 70th Anniversary Season. Since its inaugural season in 1949, Denver has made 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, 17 appearances in the Frozen Four and won eight National Championships, tied for the second-most titles among any college hockey program
