Game Preview: No. 4 Denver at Omaha

The No. 4 Denver Pioneers (15-4-3, 5-3-2-1) look to continue their run of six straight wins with a road series against Omaha. The series will mark the first road series for the Pioneers since Dec. 6-7 at Arizona State and the first road conference series since Nov. 8-9 at Minnesota Duluth. Puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m. MT on Friday.  
 
DENVER: LAST GAME
DU 6, SCSU 3 | DU 5, SCSU 3 (Jan. 10-11 | Magness Arena - Denver, Colo.)
• Friday: Denver outshot St. Cloud State 48-26 and scored three third-period goals to transform a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes into its fourth six-goal game of the season
• Saturday: After leading 4-0 by 13:20 of the second period, the Pioneers allowed three straight goals and were forced to defend their lead for the remaining 12:50 of regulation
• Denver went 3/6 on the power play and 2/4 on the penalty kill
• Sixteen Pioneers registered at least one point, led by Ian Mitchell and Brett Stapley who each logged one goal and three assists on the weekend. Magnus Chrona made 49 saves on 55 shots
 
DENVER: SNAPSHOT
• The Pioneers are on a six-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 25-12 in that stretch while going 7/21 (33.3%) on the power play and 19/22 (86.4%) on the penalty kill. Prior to the streak, Denver was 1-4-3 in eight games. The Pioneers started the year on an eight-game winning streak from Oct. 5 - Nov. 2
• Denver ranks 2nd in the NCAA in shots on goal per game (35.50). The Pioneers have outshot their opponent in 19 of their 22 games this season and are 14-3-2 in those games. Denver has outshot its opponent in 10 of its last 11 games and has outshot its opponent by double digits on eight occasions
• The Pioneers' penalty kill is 7th in the NCAA, going 74/83 (89.2%). Denver has scored four shorthanded goals, T-5th in the NCAA
 
DENVER: UP NEXT
Jan. 24-25 at Miami (Goggin Ice Center - Oxford, Ohio)  
• The Pioneers are 15-12-3 all-time against Miami, going 1-1-0 last season. Denver did not make the trip to Oxford, Ohio last season
• Denver is 3-1-1 in its last five meetings with Miami and 5-2-3 in the last 10
 
OMAHA: SNAPSHOT
• The Mavericks have gone 2-2-1 in their last five games with a highlight 6-3 victory on the road against No. 1 North Dakota on Jan. 10
• Taylor Ward leads Omaha with 19 points (12-7-19) in 22 games. He had two goals and one assist last weekend and has scored at least one point in five of the last six games
• The Mavericks and Pioneers are tied for having the 10th-highest scoring offense in the NCAA, each averaging 3.41 goals per game
• Omaha has only one win in its last six home games with a 1-4-1 mark
 
OMAHA: UP NEXT
Jan. 24-25 at Colorado College (Broadmoor World Arena - Colorado Springs, Colo.)
• The Mavericks are 15-9-5 all-time against the Tigers, going 0-1-1 last season, 1-2-2 in the last five games and 5-3-2 in the last 10 games
 
DENVER VS. OMAHA
• The Pioneers are 30-9-3 all-time against the Mavericks, going 3-0-1 last season and having not lost a game to Omaha in 16 meetings. Denver's last loss to the Mavericks was on Jan. 10, 2015 at Baxter Arena
Ian Mitchell leads Denver skaters with eight points (2-6-8) in six games vs. Omaha
• Omaha forward Kevin Conley transferred from Denver after the 2016-17 season
• Ten Pioneers were junior hockey teammates with at least one member of the Mavericks across the USHL, NAHL and BCHL

Ian Mitchell was named NCHC Defenseman of the Week on Jan. 13 after recording one goal and three assists in Denver's sweep of St. Cloud State on Jan. 10-11

SCORING STATS
• Denver is 12-0-1 when leading and 2-0-1 when tied after the second period
• The Pioneers have a +28 overall goal margin, 9th in the NCAA, as well as a +34 margin in the second and third periods, 2nd in the NCAA
 
GUTT CHECK
Cole Guttman has six goals and three assists in his last seven games. Prior to his streak, the Tampa Bay Lightning prospect had three goals and three assists through 14 games
• This season, Denver is 9-0-2 when Guttman scores a point and 7-0-1 when he scores a goal
 
SUPER SOPHOMORES
• Denver's sophomore class ranks 2nd in the NCAA in scoring with 88 points (31-57-88) and accounts for 42% of the Pioneers' point production

• This season, the Pioneers are 12-0-0 when Ian Mitchell scores a point and 3-4-3 when he does not
 
EXTENDING THE STREAK
• On March 15, 2019, the Pioneers became only the third team in NCAA history to compile 18-consecutive 20-win seasons. The last time Denver missed the 20-game mark was 2000-01 when the team went 19-15-4
• The Pioneers' streak of 18 straight 20-win seasons is the longest active streak in the NCAA. The NCAA record for consecutive 20-win seasons is held by Michigan, which had 25 from 1987-2012
 
HOME COOKIN'
• Denver is 35-10-8 at home since the 2017-18 season, posting a .660 winning percentage and taking points from 81% of its games
 
GWOZDECKY INDUCTED TO DENVER ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
• Former head coach George Gwozdecky was named among 12 inductees for the 2020 Denver Athletic Hall of Fame class to be honored on campus May 16, 2020
• Gwozdecky posted a 443-267-64 record with the Pioneers from 1994-2013, winning back-to-back National Championships in 2004 & 2005, three WCHA regular-season titles, four WCHA playoff titles and posting 16 20-win seasons. He received the Spencer Penrose Award as National Coach of the Year in 2005
 
MITCHELL & WIERCIOCH WIN SPENGLER CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
Ian Mitchell and alum Patrick Wiercioch won Canada's 16th Spengler Cup Championship on Dec. 31. Mitchell finished the tournament with one goal and two assists in four games as the youngest player on the roster
 
NON-CONFERENCE STREAK
• Prior to Dec. 6 at Arizona State, the Pioneers were undefeated in 19 straight non-conference games with a 17-0-2 mark in that stretch
• Denver is 24-3-5 against non-conference opponents since the 2017-18 season
 
70TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
• The Pioneers are playing in their 70th Anniversary Season. Since its inaugural season in 1949, Denver has made 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, 17 appearances in the Frozen Four and won eight National Championships, tied for the second-most titles among any college hockey program
