BALTIMORE – Former University of Denver women's soccer centerback
Cheyenne Shorts (Denver, Colo.) was selected by the Orlando Pride with the 21
st overall pick (Round 3, Pick 3) in the 2020 NWSL Draft Thursday afternoon at the Baltimore Convention Center.
"Being able to watch Cheyenne play since her pre-collegiate days in Denver, she's shown tremendous drive and passion for the game throughout the time I've known her, and deserves every bit of the sense of accomplishment and pride associated with the honor of being drafted," head coach
Jeff Hooker said. "She grew into a fantastic centerback during her career here at the University of Denver, and her commitment to not be content with her level of play, but to get better every day is what got her to this point. The entire staff is so proud of Cheyenne and we wish her all the best in her professional career."
With the selection, Shorts becomes the second Pioneer taken in the NWSL Draft. Former Pioneer Kristen Hamilton is the only other Denver star to be taken in the draft, selected 36
th overall in the 2014 draft.
Shorts, the 2019 Summit League Defensive Player of the Year and now two-time Summit League First Team honoree, captained a Denver defense that allowed just 11 shots on goal in league matches and finished the regular season fourth in the country in shots on goal allowed behind only Virginia, Stanford and Monmouth.
In her career as a whole, the 2019 All-West Region First Team selection made 69 appearances, starting 68 matches for the Crimson and Gold. Shorts tallied seven assists and was a part of 30 cleansheets for Denver. The 2019 captain was also a two-time Summit League All-Tournament Team selection.
