Groters 200 IM DU Record Highlights Thursday at Summit League Champs

The Pioneers take commanding leads in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs opened up big leads halfway through the 2020 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at the Midco Aquatic Center.

Patrick Groters (Santa Cruz, Aruba) broke Denver's school record in the 200 IM with a 1:46.24, snapping Tim Cottam's three-year old mark (1:46.95). Groters' time was also good enough for the Summit League Championship record. Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Sid Farber (Portland, Ore.) both broke the 50 free Summit League Championship record, Auchinachie doing it in this morning's prelims with a 19.22 and Farber answering with a 19.17 Thursday night.

Denver opened the night with a strong start on the women's 1-meter diving board. Senior Sammy Walker won her second 1-meter dive Summit League Championship title in the last three years with her 262.00. Sophomore Kylie Katsuyoshi (Morgan Hill, Calif.) improved her finish by five spots in the 1-meter from her rookie season a year ago, taking second with a 252.80.

The Pioneers opened the swimming portion of the meet with a sweep of the 200 free relays.
Auchinachie, Farber, Cy Jager (Moscow, Idaho) and Adriel Sanes (Rosharon, Texas) combined for a time of 1:17.48 to earn another NCAA Standard in the event and set the new Summit League Championship record. The women's quartet of Aysia Leckie (Georgetown, Ontario), Erika Remington (Cedarburg, Wis.), Livi Schmid (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Sarah Lingen (Maple Grove, Minn.) combined for a time of 1:32.23 to win the women's race. The victory in the event was the men's seventh and the women's fifth of the season.

Denver opened the individual swimming races with a sweep of the podium in the women's 500 free. Angie Lindsay (Beaverton, Ore.) earned her first 500 free win of the season with a 4:54.18 to lead a group of four Pioneers in the A-Final. Izzy Smith (Leawood, Kan.) took second with a 4:57.15, Andi Johnston (Fort Collins, Colo.) followed just behind her in third with a 4:57.30 and Sofia Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.) finished fifth in 5:01.11.

Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) completed a career sweep of the 500 free Summit League titles, winning his fourth on Thursday night with a 4:25.88. Jesse Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) took second in the Pio sweep of the top four places in the event with a 4:28.08. Riley Babson (Vail, Ariz.) and Nathan Rock (Boulder, Colo.) took third and fourth with times of 4:28.17 and 4:31.16, respectively.

Denver put six women's swimmers in the 100 fly A-Final on Thursday, occupying the top five spots and six of the top seven in the final. Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) and Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) both earned NCAA B Standard times, finishing in 53.16 and 53.19, respectively. McKayla Sanchez (Temecula, Calif.), Natalie Arky (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Lingen occupied the next three spots on the leaderboard and Deniz Ozkan (Istanbul, Turkey) took seventh with a 56.01.

Neil Wachtler (Waco, Texas) swam the men's 100 fly in a time trial on Wednesday night, tying assistant coach Kyle Robrock's school record in the event (47.04 – NCAA B Standard), but Wacthler did not compete in the proper event on Thursday.

Jager and Graham Walker (Nairobi, Kenya) took the top two spots in the 100 fly finals with times of 48.59 and 48.81.

Denver's women continued to build its point total as it looks to snap its Summit League total points record from a year ago, taking the top five spots in the women's 200 IM on Thursday. Charlotte Simon (Saint Remy, France) took the top spot with a 2:02.68, Emily Vandenberg (Ajax, Ontario) finished second in 2:04.07, Brandi Vu (Longmont, Colo.) reached the wall third in 2:04.17, Ally Yancy (Cave Creek, Ariz.) clocked in at 2:04.53 to take fourth and Uma Knaven (Chapel Hill, N.C.) finished fifth after her 2:04.72.

On the men's side, the Pioneers had six spots in the 200 IM A-Final. Groters led the pack with his school record time of 1:46.24 and Sanes earned a spot on the podium with a second place finish in 1:47.90. Anthony Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.) reached the wall in fourth in 1:50.28, followed by 6-8 finishes from Blayze Jessen (Denver, Colo.), Wachtler and Trent Panzera (Gauteng, South Africa).

The Pioneers continued their success in the first night with individual swimming events, concluding Thursday night's action with the sprint free races. Remington won the women's race with a 23.06, Leckie took second in 23.11, Lingen finished fourth with a 23.64 and Schmid clocked in at 23.81 to tie for sixth.

Just hours after Auchinachie set the Summit League Championship record in the 50 free, Farber took it for himself with a 19.17 in Thursday night's finals. Auchinachie took second with a 19.23, as both swimmers claimed NCAA Standards for the second time today (Auchinachie earned a third leading off the 200 free relay). Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) finished fourth in 20.12, Jackson Gainer (San Jose, Calif.) sprinted into fifth after a 20.16 and Spencer Adrian (Portland, Ore.) clocked in at 20.79 to take eighth.
