Pioneers rise spots on Saturday
PALM DESERT, Calif. – The University of Denver men's golf team jumped three spots on the team leaderboard after a strong second round on Saturday at the par-72, 7,305 yard Classic Club. The Pioneers fired a 3-under (285) par second round to finish the day with a two round score of 574 (2-under).
No. 19 Auburn leads the 21-team field with a score of 563 (13-under); while No. 50 Charlotte (566; 10-under) and Boise State (573; 3-under) round out the top three spots.
"Great playing from the guys," head coach Erik Billinger said. "To see them get as deep as 10-under today this difficult golf course was really impressive. John and Carson continue to lead the way. It'll be a great experience tomorrow as we continue to play smart and disciplined golf. Proud of these guys, they are fun to watch."
John Sand recorded his second straight round of the tournament below par or better with a second round score of even par (72). Sand added four more birdies to bring his tournament total to 10. He is tied for ninth with a 36-hole total of 141 (3-under).
Carson Griggs finished the day with four birdies, scoring a second day total of even par (72). He is tied for 16th with a score of 142 (2-under).
Cal McCoy and Connor Jones each made significant jumps on the individual leaderboard in round two. McCoy finished the day even par (72), jumping 23 spots to sit tied for 43rd with a score of 147 (3-over). Jones has a two round score of 147 (3-over) after recording a 3-under (69) par second round. He catapulted 51 spots and is tied for 43rd.
Jun Ho Won is tied for 76th with a score of 152 (8-over).
Three Pioneers – Eric Hagen, Esteban Missura, and Jackson Solem – are competing as individuals. Solem heads to the final round tied 30th with a score of 145 (1-over).
Hagen has a 36-hole total of 152 (8-over), sitting tied for 76th. Missura is tied for 94th with a total of 155 (11-over).
