DENVER – University of Denver gymnastics senior Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) has been named one of six finalists for the prestigious AAI Award. The award is presented to the most outstanding senior gymnast in the country and is considered the Heisman Trophy of college gymnastics.
 
Karr is just Denver's second AAI Award finalist, the first being Nina McGee in 2016.
 
Joining Karr are five more finalists: Kennedi Edney (LSU), Taylor Houchin (Nebraska), Mollie Korth (Kentucky), Maggie Nichols (Oklahoma) and Kyla Ross (UCLA).
 
Coaches will vote to determine the winner, which will be announced at the NCAA National Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, on April 15.
 
Karr has become one of the most successful gymnasts in University of Denver history. This season, she tied DU's all-time record score in the all-around (39.775) and became the Denver record holder for most individual career titles won (106). She has tied her career highs on all four events in 2020, each at least 9.950. Twice she has scored a perfect 10.0 this year, both coming at away meets, and she has four near-perfect 9.975s on bars in 2020.
 
Throughout her career, Karr has collected numerous accolades including 15 All-American nods (regular- and postseason) and three Region 2 Gymnast of the Year honors. In 2019, she became DU's first-ever Big 12 Conference all-around champion and at the NCAA National Championships, she tied for sixth on bars and tied for 11^th in the all-around.
 
The Denver senior has competed in the all-around in every meet of her career and owns Denver's all-time records for highest National Qualifying Score in the all-around (39.680) and on bars (9.960).
 
Karr will help lead No. 7-ranked Denver in the team's regular season finale on Saturday, March 14, at No. 19 Nebraska. DU begins its postseason at the 2020 Big 12 Championship on March 21.
