Women's Lacrosse: 2020 Year In Review

DENVER - Despite the season being cut short, the University of Denver Women's Lacrosse team soared to new heights during its 2020 season, finishing at 7-1 overall, while landing five BIG EAST weekly honors and one national nod through five weeks of play.

"As difficult as the end of this year has been, I am so grateful for the 2020 squad." head coach Liza Kelly said. "They are a hardworking group that made every day enjoyable."

PRESEASON HONORS

The Pioneers entered the season ranked No. 10 in the IWLCA Coaches poll, the highest preseason ranking in program history. DU was tabbed for a first-place finish in the BIG EAST Preseason poll, while landing five All-BIG EAST preseason selections (Molly Little, Carson Gregg, Quintin Hoch-Bullen, Hannah Liddy and Eliza Radochonski).

Hoch-Bullen picked up a slew of preseason honors prior to her junior campaign. The Ontario native was named preseason BIG EAST Attacker of the Year, an Inside Lacrosse preseason All-American honorable mention selection and landed a spot on the Tewaaraton watch list for the first time in her career.

Along with a preseason All-BIG EAST nod, Little entered her senior season as a third-team Inside Lacrosse All-American selection, while also earning a spot on the Tewaaraton watch list.

REGULAR SEASON

The Crimson and Gold fired off four-straight wins to open their season, taking down Stanford in the home opener (17-13), Louisville in its next game (15-6) and continuing its win streak with two straight home victories over Oregon (21-7) and Harvard (15-6). Vanderbilt handed the Pioneers their one and only loss of the season on March 1 (14-13) before DU closed out the season with wins over Fresno State (20-6), Fairfield (21-11) and Coastal Carolina (13-6).

The Pioneers were dangerous offensively, outscoring their opponents 135-69 and posting stellar numbers defensively, ranking fifth in the country in caused turnovers per game (12.5).

LEADERS

Hoch-Bullen led the way offensively, scoring at least one goal in all eight games. The junior had a team-high 33 goals, 44 points and seven hat tricks with a shot percentage of .524 and two BIG EAST Attacker of the week honors. Hoch-Bullen notched a career-high seven goals at Vanderbilt and a career-best eight points against Coastal Carolina in the final game of the season.

Carson Gregg started all eight games in goal for Denver, coming away with 47 saves and a save percentage of .443. The senior notched her 300th career save in the Pioneers' win over Fresno State on March 4. Gregg earned national recognition following her 14-save performance against Stanford in the season-opener, earning the first IWLCA DI National Defensive Player of the Week award of the season.

Other statistical leaders for Denver were Sam Thacker (13 caused turnovers), Little (37 draw controls), Liddy (17 assists), and Kailee Lammers (19 ground balls).

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Gracie DeRose earned her first career BIG EAST weekly honor on March 9 after notching a pair of career-highs against Fairfield. Radochonski was named BIG EAST Attacker of the week on Feb. 24 after leading the BIG EAST in points (12) against Oregon (Feb. 21) and Harvard (Feb. 23). Little was tabbed BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 17 after recording four draw controls and helping the Pioneer defense hold Louisville to just six goals in the contest.

Caroline Wiseman and Bea Behrins each locked in their first career sock tricks during the short season. Behrins notched the first Pioneer sock trick of the year at Louisville on Feb. 15, while Wiseman made a name for herself scoring six goals in Denver's victory over Fairfield (March 8).

While the ending to the 2020 season wasn't ideal for the Pioneer squad, Kelly is optomistic when looking ahead to next season.

"We will have many amazing memories to look back on," Kelly said. "If 2020 teaches us anything, it is to make the most of all the little moments!"
