Match Preview: Denver Heads to Oral Roberts for Top of the Table Clash

The Golden Eagles are a point ahead of the Pioneers in the Summit League standings, but the Pioneers have a game in hand and are the only perfect team left in the table

DENVER – The University of Denver men's soccer team returns to the road for a crucial Summit League match this weekend as the Pioneers battle league-leaders Oral Roberts in Tulsa on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT. Denver is the only perfect team remaining in league play but are a point behind the Golden Eagles with a game in hand.

Denver (8-2-2, 3-0-0 Summit) vs. Oral Roberts (9-1-1, 3-0-1 Summit):

Jack and Sheila Weinberg Head Men's Soccer Coach Jamie Franks:
Jamie Franks is in his seventh season as the bench boss for the Pioneers and his 10th on the Denver campus overall. The head coach of the 2016 National Coaching Staff of the Year has put together a 81-28-15 record and has led Denver to all but two of the league trophies available (2019 regular season and 2017 postseason) since Denver joined the Summit League in 2013.

Series History: Denver vs. Oral Roberts:
The Pioneers are 11-3-0 in the series history that included 10-consecutive wins at the start of the series. Oral Roberts picked up its first win in the series in 2019 and has won three of the last four, all by scores of 1-0.

Last Time Out:
Following a 2-1 extra time winner at Virginia on Monday, the Pioneers earned a 1-1 draw with Stanford at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium last Saturday. Denver gave up a 52nd minute goal on a free kick from just inside Stanford's half, but leveled it through Stefan DeLeone's third of the season, knocking home a rebound off a penalty kick save.

Notes:
-          Two-time captain Liam Johnson was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
-          Denver's freshman class was ranked the seventh-best recruiting class in the country according to Top Drawer Soccer.
-          Denver is 73-8-7 at home since Jamie Franks joined the staff in 2012.
-          The Pioneers are 39-6-5 in Summit League play since joining the league in 2013.
-          On Monday, Liam Johnson was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, thanks in large part to his game-saving headed clearance in the 88th minute of Denver's 2-1 win at Virginia.
-          Denver is 25th in the country and first in the Summit League in goals against average at 0.800.

Up Next:
The Pioneers will close out the regular season with two more matches in league play. Denver will host Omaha on October 30 at 7 p.m. MT, before heading to Kansas City for the finale at 6 p.m. MT.
