Match Preview: Pios Head to Clemson for NCAA Second Round Sunday

The Pioneers return to Historic Riggs Field for the first time since 2016 NCAA Quarterfinal

CLEMSON, S.C. – Following Thursday night's 1-0 victory at Grand Canyon, the Pioneers will hop on a plane Friday to head back to Clemson, S.C., for the first time since the 2016 NCAA Quarterfinal, when the Pioneers and Tigers clash Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/5 p.m. MT.

Jamie Franks is in his seventh season as the bench boss for the Pioneers and his 10th on the Denver campus overall. The head coach of the 2016 National Coaching Staff of the Year has put together an 83-29-18 record and has led Denver to all but two of the league trophies available (2019 regular season and 2017 postseason) since Denver joined the Summit League in 2013.

Series History: Denver vs. Clemson:
An 89th minute header from centerback Kortne Ford led the Pioneers to a 1-0 win at No. 3 Clemson in the 2016 NCAA Quarterfinal, the only previous meeting between the two programs.  
 
Last Time Out:
Kengo Ohira hit a bomb from outside the area and Denver's defense combined for its seventh cleansheet on the campaign to take the Pioneers past Grand Canyon in Phoenix 1-0 on Thursday night in the NCAA First Round.
 
Notes:
  • Two-time captain Liam Johnson was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
  • Denver's freshman class was ranked the seventh-best recruiting class in the country according to Top Drawer Soccer.
  • Denver is 73-9-7 at home since Jamie Franks joined the staff in 2012.
  • The Pioneers are 40-7-6 in Summit League play since joining the league in 2013.
  • Denver is 14th in the country in goals against average entering the week with a 0.771 mark.
