Two Pioneers look to make the roster for the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship from Dec. 26-Jan. 5
DENVER – University of Denver defenseman Sean Behrens and forward Carter Mazur have been invited to take part in the U.S. National Junior Team Training Camp in preparation for the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, USA Hockey announced on Tuesday.
This year's camp in Plymouth, Michigan, will begin on Dec. 13 and the pair of Pioneers are two of 31 players that will be competing for spots on Team USA's 25-man roster. The annual under-20 tournament will be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5.
Behrens, 18, is tied for the Denver lead with 11 assists this season and began the year on a five-game assist/point streak (0g/7a). The freshman produced a season-high three assists on Oct. 16 vs. Air Force and then recorded his second multi-point game with two helpers last on Nov. 12 against Western Michigan. The Colorado Avalanche prospect (selected No. 61 overall in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft) was named the NCHC Defenseman of the Week for Oct. 11-17.
The Barrington, Illinois, native spent the previous two years with the U.S. National Team Development Program in Plymouth, where he registered 35 points (seven goals, 28 assists) in 46 total games during the 2020-21 campaign. He had one goal and three assists in five games as an alternate captain for Team USA at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship. At the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, Behrens led the tournament with seven assists and finished first among all defensemen with eight points (1g/7a) while also being named to the all-star team and winning a silver medal with the U.S.
Mazur, 19, has 10 points (7g/3a) in 10 games this season and ranks tied for second on the Pioneers with seven goals. The seven markers are also tied for the most in the country by a freshman. He opened his college career by scoring two goals on Oct 8 versus Arizona State, becoming the first DU freshman to tally twice in his NCAA debut since Luke Salazar on Oct. 11, 2008 against Notre Dame. The forward recorded a season-best three points (one goal, two assists) on Nov. 12 versus Western Michigan and then added another goal the following night against the Broncos, helping him earn conference honors as the NCHC's Rookie of the Week.
The Jackson, Michigan, native played seven games with the Under-17 team at the U.S. National Team Development Program in 2018-19 but spent most of his time that season with the Little Caesars 16-Under squad. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings at 70th overall (third round) in the 2021 NHL Draft, Mazur skated the previous two seasons with the Tri-City Storm in the United States Hockey League and recorded 44 points (20 goals, 24 assists) in 47 games last year while also serving as the team captain.
Both Behrens and Mazur also participated in this past summer's World Junior Sumer Showcase in Plymouth.
Current Denver junior forward Bobby Brink, 20, was on Team USA's roster last year and helped the Americans win their fifth World Junior title.
